"This early bibliography of incunables in Genoa, Pavia, and Brescia is attributed to Mauro Boni (title in English: Letters on the First Printed Books in Some Cities and Lands of the Upper Italy, Hitherto Unknown). Two of the three title pages are decorated with engravings by the Venetian artist Francesco Novelli (1767-1836). Novelli acquired a reputation as a copyist of Rembrandt etchings, a reputation which led some historians to value his work only for its draftsmanship and technical skill. The Oxford Dictionary of Art gives him only a small paragraph: "Francesco Novelli was the son and pupil of Pietro Antonio Novelli III. He went on to work at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice before going to Rome. Novelli merits special mention for the copies he made of Rembrandt's etchings, with such remarkable skill that his reproductions have sometimes been confused with the originals. He also produced engravings of Mantegna's drawings, and was a member of several academies." (Julie L. Melby, Princeton, Graphic Arts Blog, 2012/02 post) "Of great importance because it forms the basis for the argument used by Mauro Boni that Jenson was the one to introduce printing to Venice, as we shall see later, is a notice about Jenson given by the great Venetian statesman and historian Marino Sanuto (1466-1536). In his Le vite dei dogi, the first draft of which he completed about 1493—therefore writing about events which took place some thirty years earlier and even before he was born—Sanuto states under the year 1461 that at this time printing was first introduced into Venice, and later throughout Italy, by some Germans, among whom there was one called Nicolo Jenson Todescho, who was the first to print books in Venice. One should note that Sanuto refers to Jenson as a German, an error which detracts from the veracity of the whole statement. [.] He erred, for a year had not passed before another Venetian, Mauro Boni, felt compelled to try to refute this evidence. Boni's main argument was based upon the passage from Sanuto's Le vite dei dogi, where Jenson is mentioned as the first printer in Venice, and in another passage where Sanuto refers to the monopoly granted to Johannes of Speyer, giving the correct date, 18 September 1469. Now, argues Boni, if Sanuto is correct in his later statement, and this is proven by the decree just published by Morelli, how could he be wrong in his first statement? Of course such acrobatics in logic were not very convincing and the following year (1794) were challenged by Michael Denis, director of the Court Library in Vienna, and refuted by Domenico Maria Pellegrini."
