Symphonie, 1812, ist infolge starken Beschneidens auf der in der Musikabteilung der Preußischen Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin befindlichen Originalhandschrift von Beethovens 7. Symphonie nur noch zu lesen…. Zu ergänzen ist wohl Mai, da der Tonsetzer an den K. K. Gubernialrat und steiermärkischen Kammerprokurator Joseph Ritter von Varena in Graz, der ihn für ein Wohltätigkeitskonzert um eine neue Komposition gebeten hatte, am 8. Mai geschrieben hat: "Für die künftige Akademie der ehrwürdigen Ursulinerinnen verspreche ich Ihnen sogleich eine ganz neue Sinfonie" und am 19. Juli: "Eine neue Sinfonie ist schon bereit dazu; da der Erzherzog Rudolph sie abschreiben ließ, so macht Ihnen das gar keine Kosten." Wichtig ist, daß Beethoven in einem undatierten Briefe, den der Leipziger Verlag Breitkopf & Härtel am 1. Juni 1812 erhalten hat, die Äußerung getan hat: "Ich schreibe drei neue Sinfonien, von denen eine bereits vollendet ist." Begonnen ist die siebente Symphonie, die Beethoven in seinem Briefe an Peter Salomon vom 1. Juni 1816 als eine seiner vorzüglichsten bezeichnet hat, spätestens im Jahre 1811. Vorarbeiten linden sich dazu in dem sogenannten Petterschen Skizzenbuch, das nach Thayers Ansicht schon 1809 begonnen ist, während Nottebohm wohl richtiger die ersten Eintragungen erst ins Jahrl811 setzt Der zweite Satz (das Allegretto in amoll) geht in seinem Hauptthema sogar ins Jahr 1806 zurück. Nottebohm, der,Zweite Beethoveniana (1887)S.1OO ff., ausführlich die Skizzen der ganzen Symphonie bespricht, hat es zwischen Arbeiten zum zweiten und dritten Satz des Quartetts op. 69 Nr 3 gefunden, für das es also ursprünglich bestimmt gewesen ist (vgl. auch S. 86). Ob das Thema des Trios* des Scherzos wirklich ein niederOsterreichischer Wallfahrtsgesang gewesen ist, was der Abt Maximilian Stadler behauptet hat, ist nicht mit Sicherheit festzustellen. -- Die erste öffentliche Aufführung der A dur-Symphonie zog sich bis zum 8. Dezember 1813 hin, obwohl bereits seit Oktober 1812 auch die achte schon fertig vorlag. Wahrscheinlich hatte Beethoven beide einem seiner Gönner gegen Honorar für einige Zeit als ausschließliches Eigentum überlassen oder hoffte immer, sie in einem eigenen Konzert voriühren zu können; vielleicht auch wollte er, da er nach England zu reisen gedachte, diese Symphonien für diesen Zweck aufbewahren. Engl.-dt. -- BEETHOVEN SYMPHONY No.6 F MAJOR (PASTORALE) OP.68 -- Gustave Nottebohm, in his Second Beethoveniana (1887), page 369 etc. has pointed out that sketches for the Pastora…l Symphony are to be found on pages originally intended for the score of the 4th Symphony, completed in 1806, and contain notes for the Mass in C major, finished on Sep. 13<h 1807. Nottebohm also gives the following remarks of Beethoven which deal partly with the wording of the headings and are partly of a general character, and adds:-"We learn little more than what the printed words tell us, but their style proves at least that Beethoven set to work after mature reflection". Beethoven's remarks are as follows: - "It is left to the listener to discover the situations for himself. -- Sinfonía caracteristica - or recollections of country-life. -- Tone-painting when pushed too far loses its value. -- Sinfonía pastorella. Anyone with a notion of country-life will imagine the composer's intentions without the help of titles or headings. -- The work as a whole can be grasped without description; it is feeling rather than tone-pairitingl" -- In a sketch for the last movement: - "Expression of thanks. Lord, we thank thee". -- Further preparatory work for the Pastoral Symphony in all its movements is to be found in a sketch book dating from No. 407 -- the first half of the year 1808, now unfortunately mutilated, and which extends to the Sonata for Piano and Violoncello op. 69 and the two Piano Trios op. 70. In the above-mentioned work (page 253) Nottebohm says: - "First appear sketches for the opening movement of the Pastoral Symphony. The beginning of the first movement is there as printed. The notes for this movement seem to be very advanced on the whole; at times they approach very closely to the final form and at other times even correspond with it exactly. They must therefore have been commenced in a different place. The second movement appears in the sketches only in an early stage of development but by degrees draws nearer and nearer to the ultimate music as we know it. The same may be said of ail the other parts of the work". -- In the autograph score presented to the Beethoven house in Bonn the following remark intended for the copyist is to be found: - "NB. All the German headings to be written in the 1st Violin part". From this written part to be found in the archives of the Society of Music Friends in Vienna, Nottebohm (page 378) has gathered the following title:- "Sinfonia Pastorella. -- Pastoral Symphony or -- Recollections of country-life". Dt.-engl. -- BEETHOVEN, SYMPHONIE No.2, D DUR, OP.36 -- In der Zeit, wo Beethoven bereits die schwersten Sorgen um sein Gehör hatte, kurz bevor er sein erschütterndes, tief-trauriges Testament vom 6. Oktobe…r 1802 niederschrieb, muß die als Nr 2 veröffentlichte Symphonie op. 36 in Ddur in Heiligenstadt, einem Dorfe bei Wien, ihrer Vollendung entgegengereift sein. Skizzen zum ersten Satz, die sich zwischen Entwürfen zu den Klavier-Violin-Sonaten op. 23 und 24, den Klavier-Sonaten op.26 und op. 27 Nr 1, sowie zu dem Ballett "Die Geschöpfe des Prometheus" op. 43 finden, hat G. Nottebohm, Zweite Beet-hoveniana (1887) S. 243 ff. veröffentlicht. "Sie erreichen . . . die endgültige Form nicht, kommen derselben jedoch im ganzen so nahe, daß daraus auf vorhergehende Arbeiten zu schließen ist." Skizzen zum Larghetto scheinen nicht mehr erhalten zu sein, ebenso zum Scherzo. Thayer-Deiters-Riemann II, 375 kann ich nicht beipflichten, beziehe die dort mitgeteilte Skizze nicht auf das Trio des Scherzos dieser Symphonie, sondern auf -- das Andante der in Cmoll, wie z. B. auch Grove. Indem sogenanntenKeßlerschen Skizzenbuch, das von Nottebohm 1865 größtenteils veröffentlicht worden ist, finden sich mehrere Entwürfe zum letzten Satz, deren letzter die endgültige Fassung festlegt. -- Die erste Aufführung der Symphonie, deren Originalniederschrift leider verlorengegangen ist, fand am 5. April 1803 in einem eigenen Konzert des Tonsetzers statt. Wenn dessen Bruder Karl den Leipziger Musikverleger Härtel auf eine bald fertig werdende Symphonie am 28. März 1802 hinweist) und auf eine Anfrage des Bonner Musikverlegers N.Simrockvon einer Symphonie am 23.November 1802 schreibt, wenn er Härtel wieder am 22.Januar 1803 vergeblich eine große Symphonie angeboten hat,und wenn Beethoven am 25. Mai 1803 an den Bonner Musikverleger N. Simrock schreibt: "Dann können Sie auch eine große Sinfonie allein um 400 fl. (Gulden) haben", so kann sich dies nur auf die zweite beziehen.
