Il Nordau, al secolo Simon Maximilian Südfeld (in ungherese Simon Miksa Südfeld, Pest, 1849-Parigi, 1923) fu fortunatissima ed eclettica figura di leader sionista (fu cofondatore, insieme a Theodor Herzl, della Organizzazione sionista mondiale) e di sociologo. Da un'angolazione prettamente positivista tipica della sua epoca, Nordau condusse un attacco impietoso contro i mali ed i luoghi comuni della società di fine Ottocento; per le sue abili doti di volgarizzazione, i suoi libri ottennero immensa eco a cavallo tra Otto- e Novecento e a lui Lombroso dedicò il proprio Uomo delinquente.
