Trade paperback. Condizione: Very good. First Printing [Stated]. xiv, 306 pages. Key Sources. Glossary. Contributors. Index. Michael Greenberg is distinguished professor and associate dean of the faculty of the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, Rutgers University. He has written more than 30 books and more than 300 articles. He has been a member of National Research Council Committees that focus on the destruction of the U.S. chemical weapons stockpile and nuclear weapons; chemical waste management; and the degradation of the U.S. government physical infrastructure, and sustainability and the U.S. EPA. Currently, he is chairing a Committee for the appropriations committees of the U.S. Senate and House to determine the extent that the US DOE emphasizes human health and safety in its allocations for remediating former nuclear weapons sites. Dr. Greenberg has received awards from the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the Society for Professional Journalists, the Public Health Association, the Association of American Geographers, and Society for Risk Analysis. He served as area editor for social sciences and then editor-in-chief of Risk Analysis: An International Journal during the period 2002-2013, and continues as associate editor for environmental health for the American Journal of Public Health. An essential reference for journalists, activists, and students, this book presents scientifically accurate and accessible overviews of 24 of the most important issues in the nuclear realm, including: health effects, nuclear safety and engineering, TMI and Chernobyl, nuclear medicine, food irradiation, transport of nuclear materials, spent fuel, and nuclear weapons. Each "brief" is based on interviews with named scientists, engineers, or administrators in a nuclear specialty, and each has been reviewed by a team of independent experts. The objective is not to make a case for or against nuclear-related technologies, but rather to provide definitive background information. (The approach is based on that of The Reporter's Environmental Handbook, published in 1988, which won a special award for journalism from the Sigma Delta Chi Society of professional journalists.) Other features of the book include: a glossary of hundreds of terms, an introduction to risk assessment, environmental and economic impacts, and public perceptions, an article by an experienced reporter with recommendations about how to cover nuclear issues, quick guides to the history of nuclear power in the United States, important federal legislation and regulations, nuclear position statements, and key organizations.

Landscape quarto red cloth spined chromolith boards (slightly marked/edges shelf worn but cover illustration bright) 127pp printed one side of leaf only but pagination includes the versos.
