Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Later Printing. (no dust jacket) [a sound copy, lightly shelfworn, internally OK but with quite a bit of soiling to yellow cloth covers, especially along the spine]. Crime novel about the son of a saloon-keeper who's put out of business by Prohibition, and the son's subsequent descent into a life of crime, which "is shown with startling clarity through scenes of murder, of dope-peddling, of prison cell, and of speakeasy and night-club life." (Quoting from the dust jacket on another copy; NOT present with this book.) The author was, at the time, serving a seven-year prison sentence for his own criminal activity, and had had some of his earlier work published by Haldeman-Julius Publications and (like more than one other criminal-aspiring writer) by H.L. Mencken in The American Mercury. This book, it was stated, "is in no sense autobiographical, although it contains much material that Mr. Maynard has observed at first hand." It was, it seems, his final literary effort.

Use the bar for a lunch counter.'From then on, life was cruel to August and to Benny, his son.
