This rare children's book on the countries of the world was produced in mid 1938 in the UK. It appears to have been intended as a social studies text for children. Published on the eve of World War II, in mid-1938 and after the Anschluss of Austria by Nazi Germany. "The Story of the World" was published just over a year before the outbreak of World War II. You can read in its opening sentence a hint of the coming storm: "If we are to have some understanding of the causes underlying the complex international problems which threaten the well-being of the world today, we will do well to acquire some true knowledge of the earth's peoples, their lands, their ways of living and their history". Although undated, the book clearly went to print between March and September of 1938. It lists Hitler's annexation of Austria that March, March of 1938: Hitler annexes Austria by bullying and intimidation, without a shot fired (the "Anschluss.") This is Hitler's first major conquest. This book goes to press, noting that Austria is now part of Germany. This rare book is beautifully illustrated by Eileen Mayo.
