Sussex Record Society's Latest volume is an edition of the surviving correspondence of the two Dukes preserved among the Goodwod Archives in the West Sussex…Record Office and the Newcastle Papers in the British Library. The letters, which can be read as an almost continuous narrative, centre on a number of major themes in national political history, and in particular on the War of Austrian Succession; the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion; the fall of Walpole; the rise and fall of Carteret; and the careers of the Pelham brothers. At the same time they are equally revealing about the local scene, as they depict the activities of two aristocratic magnates dominating their respective halves of the county of Sussex.
