The play was first conceived as a faux boxing poster by McClure who was then inspired to write a play. The drama was first performed in late 1965 and sporadically thereafter, typically resulting in canceled performances or arrests by the police for obscenity. The play won Obie awards for Best Director and Best Actress for the 1967 season.…
