Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: VG+. Condizione sovraccoperta: VG+. Photos, Maps, Line Drawings, Diagrams (illustratore). 1st. Subtitled "A guide and natural history," Robert McDowell's study was a land-mark book on its topic and was welcomed as summarising what had been learned about this faura, including introduced species, over many years by bringing together material published in scientific journals. The author noted in his preface that there was an absence of good books for the identification of NZ fishes. The book opens with a chapter "The study and structures of fishes," followed by 17 chapters relating to the various species/families. The concluding chapter includes NZ Fish and Fisheries, Diseases and Parasites and Zoogeography The author's Epilogue contains a plea for all those involved in the administration of waterways and natural resources to remember that freshwatrer fishes inhabit the lakes and rivers of the countryside and are "part of the unique natural heritage of NZ." Basically a scientific study it is, however, written in a manner that is easily understood by the lay reader, while also of value to recreationsd fishers of lake and river and a reminder to conservationists and environmentalists that the challenges they face today were recognised when the book was published in 1978. Since then it has remained a recognised reference on the topics traversed. First edition from Heinemann, 230 pages including references and index, illustrated throughout with colour/b-w photos , numerous line drawings also diagrams and maps. Blue hard covers with gilt spine titles are VG+ with hint wear spine base/lower corners, small narrow strip cut from top corner FFEP, text block otherwise NF. Dust jacket with colour photo front a rear is VG+ with few chips. A heavy book at 950grams unpacked -- would require additional postage for international delivery.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. Ikawai: Freshwater Fishes in Maori Culture and Economy by R. M. McDowall. Publisher: Canterbury University Press, 2011, First Edition. Very good hardback with laminated boards. Binding firm, some dents/bumps to edges, light shelf-wear, scratches to covers, no inscriptions, pages very good, minor marks. 832 pages, illustrated. This landmark publication draws together all that has ever been written about the role of freshwater fishes in the lives of early Maori. Species such as tuna (eels), kanakana (lamprey), inanga and kokopu were of high importance in the traditional diets of Maori, who were well aware of the places and seasons in which these fish could be harvested. Bob McDowall has made it his life's work to read every word ever written on the subject of Maori fisheries, from passing references in explorers' diaries, to the significant literary achievements of Elsdon Best and Te Rangi Hiroa in the 1920s, to the recent reports of the Waitangi Tribunal. In Ikawai , all the knowledge on record is connected into a coherent account for the first time, and interpreted in the light of modern scientific knowledge of the fish fauna. As well as being highly informative, Ikawai also serves to illustrate the beauty associated with Maori fisheries. Bob has amassed an extraordinary collection of photographs of the fish themselves, of the artefacts Maori customarily used in catching fish, and of artworks by modern Maori practitioners, some reflecting the many legends and stories associated with fish. He has also unearthed some stunning and highly significant historical images that were hidden away in archives, libraries and photographic collections. This compendium is an essential resource for anyone interested in the lives and livelihood of New Zealand's earliest settlers. ALL PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL BOOK. All books are sent with free courier postage within New Zealand. HEAVY BOOK THAT MAY/WILL REQUIRE EXTRA SHIPPING COSTS OUTSIDE OF NEW ZEALAND.
