Brown has generously consented to write the introduction to the South-East Asian wares section. Considerable advances have been made over the past ten years in our understanding of the types of wares exhibited as a result partly of excavations in many parts of South-East Asia and elsewhere notably of the shipwrecks off the coast of South Korea at Sinan and in the Gulf of Siam and partly from an intensive study of the wares themselves. Since the Manila Trade Pottery Seminar of 1968 numerous exhibitions of trade wares have been organized in many parts of the world, and a symposium was held recently at the Chinese University of Hong Kong during which provenances and dates were suggested for whole classes of early Sung ceramics, thus adding considerably to our knowledge of the wares of this early period. It is hoped that this exhibition will give new stimulus to interest in the subject and provide new collectors with a basic knowledge of the types of wares which can occasionally still be found today in the markets of South-East Asia. The diverse pieces being shown have been drawn almost without exception from Hong Kong collections and whilst the exhibition does not pretend to be comprehensive, examples are included of most of the main types of ceramic wares commonly traded in the Far East in the period prior to 1660." excerpt from the foreword by Brian S.
