It is an ex library copy that has been subsequently bound in thick brown boards with checkered red cloth to the spine. The contents are perfectly preserved, bright, tight, white and square. There is a hand written title label… to the upper board and an attractive label to the obverse of the front cover indicating that it once resided in the reference section of Barrow County Library as part of the Fred Barnes Collection. International postal rates are calculated on a book weighing 1 Kilo, in cases where the book weighs more than 1 Kilo increased postal rates will be quoted, where the book weighs less then postage will be reduced accordingly. The little Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith Railway was initiated to establish a vital link in the railway chain which connected the two great iron producing areas of West Cumberland and Durham. To many, it was humble and almost unknown railway, not possessing any locomotives of its own, or any rolling stock either - apart from a few ballast wagons. Two great pre groupng railways, the London and North Western and the North Eastern, worked the line and from 1889 onwards two directors from each company sat on the C. K. & P. Board In spite of the line having made such a modest contribution to the great netwok of Britain's railways, the author felt its story was worth telling before it passed into the limbo of forgotten lines of which the county of Cumberland had so many. Illustrated with rare photographs from private collection many published here for the first time. This is a scarce title Ref SSS 2.

When McGowen Gradon wrote this book over fifty years ago, the line of the Cleator & Workington Junction Railway was more or less as it had been built 70 years earlier. Only a few sections had been lost, and although the sparse passen…ger service had disappeared in the early 1930s, the line still fulfilled at least some part of its original purpose - to serve the transport needs of the coal, iron and steel industries of West Cumberland. There is a publishers label on the inside of the front cover which states " There is a line missing in the sentence running over the pages 15 and 20 of this book and it goes on to say what the corrected sentence should be, it also states there is a wrong caption on the lower photograph on page 27, and tells you what the corrected one should be. There is also a small crease across the front lower corner.
