This facsimilie edition of the original of 1940, published by Marlborough Provincial Historical Committee, appeared in 1977 at a time when the first edition was entering the rare category, now the Capper reprint of 1977 is becoming scarce. This fine history was edfited by Sir Alister McIntosh who was born in the province in 1906 and had a distinguished career begining in the General Assembly Library, to important positions in Government deparments, diplomacy and as head of the Prime MInister's Depatrment. He became a Knight in 1972. The history covers the early exploration of rhe region, the coming of the whalers and eary settlers and the problems they faced, building up to the 1940s by tracing all aspects of development including governance, national and local, and the personalities who provided the leadership, political and community. The editor was assisted in the preparation of the history by two assistants, Dr W E Redman and W R Allen. Facsimilie reprint of 1977, 431 pages including three appendices which include seven lists, b/w illustrations include frontis and eight photos, art -- double page plus three, 11 portraits, two double page maps plus two, also e/paper maps.
