Based on his long experience in the field, his intimate knowledge of the scattered collections and artists and his understanding of the preliminary work already done, the author has dearly explained and illustrated the diverse faces of folk art in Canada. This is not an art for the antiquarian or the historian only, it is for all those who value the art of the humble, untrained people of this country. Sixty colour plates and more than two hundred black and white photographs trace this non~academic tradition from eighteenth~century Quebec to twentieth~century Ontario, and from coast to coast. In the past, the diversity of objects frequently described as folk art and the lack of reliable guides have created a great deal of confusion about what the term actually includes. Folk Art dispels this problem. After exploring the history of the subject, the author defines the various terms used to describe it, illustrates the best examples of primitive, naive, provincial and folk~culture artifacts, and finally deals with themes and directions in the future. A Checklist of Folk Artists identifies major artists from across the country and from the eighteenth century to the present. Folk Art will serve as a beautiful and invaluable guide for those who want to understand, collect, evaluate or simply appreciate the works of these humble yet great artists. In the words of J. Russell Harper, "This study looks at the imaginative, evocative and delightful faces of Canadian folk art. It is an interpretation based on long experience that provides glimpses of folk art's fanciful and serious worlds. It tells of both the truths and joys inherent in the business of living.".…
