This book presents a fascinating and thought-provoking argument for the use of advanced weaponry as a means of achieving universal peace. Written in the late 19th century, the author, a physician and inventor, believed that the development of more destructive weapons could ultimately deter nations from engaging in warfare. The book delves into the history of weaponry, tracing the evolution of warfare from ancient times to the author's own era, arguing that the escalating lethality of weapons could act as a powerful deterrent. It explores the potential of new technologies, including torpedoes, magazine cannons, and high-velocity firearms, to render warfare so terrifying that nations would choose peace. The author proposes a radical vision of a world secured by a balance of terror, where the very power of weapons would enforce a state of peaceful coexistence. The book is an intriguing historical document that offers a unique perspective on the relationship between technology and peace. It reminds us that even in the pursuit of noble goals, the complexities of human nature and the potential for unintended consequences must always be carefully considered. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. The methodist business man McLean's main idea of not making war was to "develop such terribly destructive weapons of war, arms, torpedoes, and fortresses, and such perfect defenses, as would compel all nations to keep peace towards each other".

Prima edizione
Large octavo, pp. [1-4] 5-200, inserted frontispiece (portrait of McLean), approximately 75 wood-engraved illustrations in the text, many full page, original pebbled plum cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black and gold, rear panel stamped in black, brown coated endpapers. First edition. An elaborate, profusely illustrated antiwar tract in the form of a satirical manufacturer's trade catalogue offering powerful military ordnance -- "peace-makers" -- which will make "war so terrible and devastating as to shock every community and cause them to rise en masse and declare that the slaughter of their fellows must cease!" (author's dedication). The author was a successful peddler of patent medicines in the St. Louis area, and, as Riling points out (see below) the style of the book, with its frequent bold headlines, is that of a patent medicine brochure. The imagined guns, torpedoes, forts etc. are not overtly fantastic, just bigger, faster, more powerful, more portable. With the impeccably drawn illustrations and confident writing style, the effect is not comically exaggerated so much as insidiously realistic, putting this production in the tradition -- so important in the nineteenth century -- of the eccentric hoax. Riling 1070. Frontispiece tissue guard spotted and stained, preliminary leaves foxed, remainder of text clean, a very good copy. (#152973).

Copia autografata
Dr. McLean, a prosperous patent medicine huckster from St. Louis, here sets forth his revolutionary weapon designs in the form of a remarkably elaborate propaganda piece. Most of his plans are based on the classic idea of inventing weapons so powerful that no enemy could withstand or even consider resisting them. Included are portable forts, impregnable fortresses (both fixed and floating), modular metal shield blocks, indestructible "Hercules Guns," rapid-fire battery guns, inescapable magnetic torpedoes; 48-shot pistols, and the like. Dr. McLean goes so far as to compare himself to Napoleon, Wellington, Washington, U.S. Grant, and others. "A fantasy of arms.Literally a book in the style of a patent medicine brochure, but applied to the consideration of arms rather than ailments" - Riling. This copy inscribed by the author. RILING 1070. Quarto. Original pictorial cloth, stamped in black and gilt, spine gilt. Edges of spine lightly scuffed. Author inscription on front pastedown and fly leaf. Mild toning, light foxing to preliminaries. Very good plus. In a black cloth slipcase.
