Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 320 pages. This innovative book examines the public architecture of Ireland from 1680 to 1760, a crucial period during which the country undertook the combined tasks of recovering from war and constructing a new and stable society. New buildings, a nd new types of buildings, were needed to expre…ss and sustain this society. Arch itectural historian Edward McParland explores the role of public architecture in this enterprise, focusing on public buildings as works of architecture and art, while also discussing the political, social, and economic contexts in which the y were built. More than one hundred specially commissioned photographs by David Davison beautifully document this cultural process. The book opens with a discussion of the people who were involved in the creation of public architectur e and a description of the physical appearance of Ireland at the time, including its roads and harbors, its market houses and churches. The author then presents detailed portraits of key public buildings, among them The Royal Hospital Kilma inham, The Royal Barracks, Dublin Castle, Trinity College Dublin, and Edward Lov ett Pearce?s Parliament House. Drawing on extensive research in archives throu ghout Britain and Ireland, McParland documents in vivid detail the architectural and social importance of these remarkable public buildings.Published for the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art.

Hardback. Condizione: New. Classicism is ubiquitous, from the facade of Selfridges to the letterhead of The Times, to the pedimented porches of neo-Georgian housing estates. This book invites readers to discover in their surroundings a rich language of form which is there to be revealed. It discusses the pleasures and problems o…f post-medieval architectural classicism, both its rigour and flexibility, its perfections and incompleteness, its continuities and innovations, and its expressiveness - from the camp to the sublime, and from originality to plagiarism. Abandoning conventional chronological, biographical or stylistic arrangements, the book makes connections between familiar art historical periods, focusing on looking closely at the buildings and their details, from which useful generalisations emerge. The book discusses how Renaissance architects, when faced with the bewildering variety of classical antiquity, produced canonical versions of the orders and thus a systematic method of designing in the antique manner. It asks how the highly regulated language of classicism can sustain the originality of a Michelangelo, a Soane or a John Simpson and looks at the human body in relation to classical architecture. It examines the various treatments of the wall and of lettering on classical buildings, before concluding with a chapter on architectural backgrounds in Quattrocento art, revealing how this can lead to a different kind of looking at painting and sculpture.

Hardback. Arthur Gibney, Four Courts Press Ltd. This study by the late Arthur Gibney takes you among labourers, craftspeople, contractors, builders and designers as they populate the building sites of eighteenth-century Ireland. Gibney tells a story that has never been told so comprehensively before. What kind of contracts bound… those involved? How much did it cost to bring a cargo of oak to the Dublin docks from Riga or Shillelagh - or of fir from Trondheim - and what kind of roof trusses or floor framing was it used for? What was distinctively Irish about these structural features? What did plumbers do? How did roofers choose between slates and shingles and pantiles, and how did this choice affect the profile of a roof? Based on extensive documentary research and on a lifetime of experience of building and conservation, Gibney takes the interested layperson, the student, the architect and the conservationist behind the facades to give us an understanding of paint colours such as Venetian red and Spanish brown, the manufacture of stucco, the variations of Irish, English and French glass, the composition of masonry walls, and much more, in our great legacy of Georgian buildings. Hardback.
