Rotterdam, Nai010, [2014]. 272 pp. Col. & b./w. ills. Orig. hardcover (pictorial boards). 4to.Comprehensive overview of the life and work of the Dutch architect Joan Melchior van der Meij (1878-1949). - Text in Dutch. - - Joan Melchior van der Meij (1878-1949) is known as one of the founders of the Amsterdam School. As the winner of the Prix de Rome (1906) and the Damprijsvraag (1908), he was regarded in his time as a promising, up-and-coming talent. Early in his career, he received the commission for what would become his most famous creation: Het Scheepvaarthuis (1911), a luxury office building for six shipping companies. Architectural historian Michiel Kruidenier and designer Paul Smeets examine Van der Meij's role within the Amsterdam School and Dutch architectural history using countless previously unpublished drawings, letters, and photographs. The book describes Van der Meij's turbulent life, full of fame and success, misfortune and financial troubles, and also contains a complete overview of his work.…
