Four double page maps with colour highlights and one single page black and white map, 9 + v+ 1198 + 92pp synoptical index + 4pp errata + [1]pp, 26.7 x 19cm, text in Japanese and other relevant languages. Lacks one leaf (page 321/22), prior owner's chops on front free endpaper and title page, half calf with red leather title label lettered in gilt, spine ruled in gilt in compartments. Leather worn and chipped at the head and tail of the spine, some insect holes to the cloth covered boards also visible on endpapers and some occasional insect damage to preliminary and last leaves mainly at margins. While lacking one leaf, the text is otherwise clean and sound. 26.5 x 20cm. Scarce on the market. Includes some attractive maps. This 1884 book was compiled to include comprehensive lists of treaties and conventions between Japan and other countries between 1854 and 1884. Each treaty or convention is printed in multi-lingual form, namely in the original languages with Japanese translation. The treaties and conventions cover diverse fields including trade agreements. Conventions on communications and postal services are also included. Various arrangements on the foreign settlements are listed with early maps of the settlements, including Yokohama, Osaka, Kobe and Nagasaki.…

50 coloured photographs - each 22.5 x 14.8cm, laid down on dark green 'Arches' type paper bound in padded silk boards, decorated with a pine needle and crane design, silk tasseled knots secure the expertly rebacked binding. Original embossed endpapers slightly sunned with prior owner details in pencil on the upper right corner. There are neat handwritten descriptions beneath each photograph in white ink. A firm and pleasing copy. 35 x 26.5cm. A collection of beautifully printed coloured Meiji Era photographs of Japan. The photos are of the type produced by Japanese photographers for sale to foreign visitors, and show some of the major attractions in Japan - many of them still recognizable today - the Nikko shrine and its surroundings, Tokyo's Ueno Park, Asakusa, Mount Fuji, the beach at Enoshima, temples and street scenes in Kyoto, Nagoya Castle,street scenes in Kobe etc. An attractive feature of this album is that it includes a number of delightful "everyday life" photos - of a shoe shop, a group of country villagers, a group of Japanese women drinking tea outside a rural house etc.…

British Ceylon and Japan photo archive, circa 1890 to 1910, documenting public ceremony, craft production, daily life during the expansion of imperial travel in Asia. The Japanese images record religious processions, rickshaw travel, workshops, and leisure scenes associated with the late Meiji period, while the Ceylon photographs depict Colombo streets, architecture, ceremonial dress, and colonial urban space. Verso inscriptions identify Nagoya and Colombo without establishing a single photographer or original sequence. Photo archive of 24 photographs, comprising eight hand colored photographs mounted to cardstock, approximately 5 x 3½ inches, and sixteen glossy and matte silver gelatin prints ranging from approximately 2½ x 2½ to 3 x 4½ inches, Japan and British Ceylon, circa 1890 to 1910. The hand colored Japanese views show women in rickshaws beneath flowering trees, artisans making paper umbrellas, workers shaping timber, a cooper surrounded by tubs and hoops, and a lantern shop filled with suspended paper lanterns. Other photographs depict monks, attendants, musicians, and costumed participants moving through public squares with parasols, banners, and ceremonial objects. The Ceylon views include a Colombo street leading toward a clock tower, palm lined compounds, civic and religious buildings, harbor craft, and men in formal ceremonial dress. Inscriptions include "Nagoya," "Colombo," and "Vue de Colombo." The Japanese photographs belong to the commercial visual culture of the Meiji era, when photographers produced hand colored views of occupations, transport, festivals, costume, and craft work for foreign travelers. These images often arranged workers and tools for clarity, while the smaller prints record crowds, streets, and religious movement with less formal staging. The Colombo photographs reflect the parallel growth of photography under British colonial rule in Ceylon, where ports, municipal buildings, and ethnographic subjects circulated through travel albums and commercial view markets. Light to moderate surface wear, fading, abrasions, edge wear, and occasional creasing; several mounts show staining or loss. Overall good condition. A compact visual record of Asian urban life, religious practice, artisanal labor, and colonial travel at the turn of the twentieth century.…
