Di Teocrito invece sono presentati gli Idilli, a cura di Marina Cavalli. La consistenza dell'opera di questo poeta non è facilmente verificabile: secondo il lessico di Suda sarebbero da attribuire a lui diversi carmi, elegie, giambi ed epigrammi, per quanto sia comunque difficile definire il corpus completo. Anche di Meleagro la raccolta contiene gli Epigrammi. Per rivisitare la sua poesia occorre accantonare il mito della letteratura europea moderna, evitando di essere influenzati dalla nozione di eros elaborata dalla poesia lirica del romanticismo. La passione, in Meleagro, suona convenzionale e fredda, ma sconcerta il suo fremere per la folla di fanciulle e ragazzi di cui canta la bellezza. Book.

Meleagro di Gadara nacque intorno al 130 a.C. a Gadara, città della Transgiordania che, sotto il regno dei Seleucidi, era diventata un notevole centro di cultura ellenica. Se come poeta la sua personalità è tutt'altro che quella di un minore, ancora più rilevanti sono i suoi meriti come divulgatore di cultura, giacché a Meleagro si deve l'antologia della "Ghirlanda", composta nell'ultima fase della sua vita, dalla quale dipende la conservazione di quanto resta della poesia epigrammatica ellenistica.
