Folio (370 x 240 mm). 5 pp. Headed "Firando [Hirado] in Japon le 1th [!] of January 1618 [but: 1617]"; addressed on verso of the third leaf to Sir Thomas Wilson, with the recipient's endorsement. Housed in a quarter morocco clamshell box, lettered in gilt. An English merchant's impressions of early 17th-century Edo, sent to his patron Sir Thomas Wilson: an unpublished and content-rich Japan letter by Richard Cocks, chief factor of the English East India Company at Hirado, with a vivid eyewitness account of Tokyo at the beginning of Tokugawa consolidation. This is one of only three surviving letters known to have been sent by Cocks to Wilson from Japan, and remains the only one apparently unpublished. - Writing from Hirado north of Nagasaki, Cocks reports on his first visit to Edo in 1616 and describes the court of the new shogun Hidetada, son of Tokugawa Ieyasu, in terms designed to convey both the scale of the city and the political discipline of the new regime. His most memorable observation, that Edo would become "one of the greatest Citties in the world", lends the letter unusual documentary force as an early English response to the emerging metropolis that would become Tokyo. - The letter also stages the English factory's role within the first, brief phase of direct Anglo-Japanese commercial relations. Appointed chief factor in 1613 after the arrival of John Saris, Cocks stood at the centre of the Company's attempts to build a trade through Hirado, Osaka, Miyako and Edo, while relying on the mediation and local knowledge of William Adams and other intermediaries. - As a document, the letter reaches beyond mercantile routine: in contrast to Cocks's formal business correspondence with the Company, it reports geography, architecture, court ceremonial and political order for an informed English patron at home, converting commercial intelligence into a broader account of Japan for a metropolitan readership. Composed at a moment when English knowledge of Japan was still exceptionally thin, the letter belongs to the earliest stratum of secular English observation of Tokugawa Japan. - Original folds; relined with conservation backing. Small tears and wear at the edges, partially affecting words in 13 lines on the second leaf and in 15 lines on the third leaf; tiny perforation at the centre of the main fold on the third leaf restored; expertly strengthened at the margins. Begins by asking for ten pounds to be paid to the bearer, Thomas Fairfax Carlile, on Hey's account. A 'hand bill' has been 'published on the occasion - but without effect', and fifteen of his 'near neighbours' have - 'without consulting me' - subscribed ten pounds each. 'A man was apprehended - but for want of sufficient evidence he was liberated to appear before the magistrate when called for, upon penalty of 40£. This man is generally - if not universally - believed to be the incendiary'. The man, to whom Hey had shown 'more than common kindness' over a period of 'more than thirty years - in youth & manhood - in sickness and in health', took against Hey on account of his displeasure at 'his very improper conduct towards his Wife'. '[D]uring the conflagration he was laughing and exclaiming "it is brought home to 'em now". According to the Victoria County History for Wiltshire Hey 'left 1,139 books and some articles of furniture for the use of future vicars. Most of the volumes were destroyed for salvage during the Second World War, but the works of Chrysostom and about 250 volumes of Hey's books survive.' From the Twining family archive.…

Begins: 'The task you set me was a task indeed [.] my first attempt at translation'. He comments on some of the difficulties involved ('The Cara so often repeated in the original is beautiful in repetition while it's angliciz'd Dear is so degraded by vulgar use'). Ends first page with transcription of 'the Bishop's Charming Elegy', and the words 'Now don't look on the other side - But if you can't help it please to shut your critical eye Mr Richard'. 8vo, 2 pp. Leaf dimensions 21 x 16.5 cm. On good wove paper. 29 lines. Text clear and complete. On the first leaf of the bifolium, with the transcription, presumably by Twining, on the recto of the second. Addressed by Parr to Twining at Devereux Court in the Strand, on the reverse of the second leaf, which carries Parr's broken seal in red wax, and a postmark. In good condition, though a little grubby. Parr's handwriting is legendarily bad (he received a flogging at Harrow because of it, and never reformed), and although the transcriber has made a game effort, there are a few lacunae. The letter begins 'The name of Twining has long been endear'd to my mind by the intellectual and moral excellencies of the Persons to whom it belonged. The accomplishment and good sense of your Father will never be forgotten.' He praises Thomas Twining, before adding 'I gladly recognise Richard as my old and worthy Pupil at Norwich.' He thanks him for his repeated 'meritorious attention to me and my young man'. He is in his seventy-eighth year, and has 'little chance of visiting the Capital again', but invites Twining to call on him in Warwickshire, asking him not to be 'content with giving me a hurrying morning call - take your dinner and your bed at my parsonage'. He would be 'glad, very glad' to shake hands with Twining's 'justly esteemed Father'.…

An unsigned draft, with deletions and emendations throughout, and the date left incomplete at the end. The document begins: 'To all to whom these presents may come I Richard Harington of Lincoln's Inn in the County of Middlesex Esq. Barrister at law send greeting'. He explains the background, and how he has been appointed arbitrator following a tial at Nisi Prius 'held at West[minster]: Hall in the County of Middlesex on Tuesday the 2nd day of May AD 1871 before the Hon Sir Anthony Cleasby Knight one of the Barons of Her Majesty's Court of Exchequer'. It is only on p.8 that he publishes his award: 'I do find adjudge order award and determine that the sd Bernard Goldschmidt had not at the commencement of the sd action of Goldschmidt v Meadows any good cause of action agst the sd John Meadows'. He directs that Goldschmidt 'deliver to the sd John Meadows or his order at Birmingham in the County of Warwick 1053 guns found of the 1600 guns delivered by or on behalf of the sd John Meadows to the sd Bernard Goldschmidt before the commencement of the sd actions as afd such 1100 guns being at the time of compliance with this order & direction in the same state & condition in all respects as they were at the time of the giving of such copy of this my award'. If Goldschmidt complies, the original award of £3000 against him will be reduced to £1100, but he will be liable for all costs.
