L'auteur ayant refondu son premier texte de 1644 dans cette édition revue, corrigée, augmentée de témoignages et oł il prit en compte certaines critiques. Il y a ajouté un catalogue des maires de La Rochelle. Pierre Mervault était un commerēant rochelais qui a servi comme soldat lors de ce fameux sičge. Il a étoffé son témoignage avec celui de son pčre, maītre d'artillerie de la ville et celui du pasteur Philippe Vincent, négociateur, qui se déplaēa ą Londres et a tenu lui aussi un journal.
