Jean Marie Lucien Pierre Anouilh (1910-87), was a French dramatist whose career spanned five decades. Though his work ranged from high drama to absurdist farce, Anouilh is best known for his 1943 play Antigone, an adaptation of Sophocles' classical drama, that was seen as an attack on Marshal Petain's Vichy government. One of France's most prolific writers after World War II, much of Anouilh's work deals with themes of maintaining integrity in a world of moral compromise. Jacket after Oliver Messel (illustratore).

In excess of 450 words. Circa 1948; no date given. The letter is remonstrating about an intervention by 'Tony' Quayle to Binky Beaumont appearing to c…riticise the production design for 'The Lady's Not For Burning'; mention is made of Pamela Brown's red dress, the composition and colours: "The whole production was in its way something that meant more to me than anything that I have done for the theatre." The letter goes into delicious detail about the actress's insistence on her own preferences for costume "making the whole thing a mess and an anticlimax. Pamela's appearance was I regret to say a great disappointment to me. She seems perfectly confident that she knows best & there seems nothing further that I can do except not to upset myself by looking at it."/The 1949 production at the Globe Theatre, London (now the Gielgud Theatre) Director: John Gielgud. Cast: John Gielgud, Pamela Brown, Richard Burton, and Claire Bloom Designed by Oliver Messel. This production ran for 293 performances and transferred to Broadway in 1950. Very good. Signedes.

A privileged youth, his name is often mentioned amongst the 'Bright Young Things', for whom costume parties at country houses and jaunts to Europe on a whim became a thing of fable. This informal group included people such as Cecil Beaton (a life-long friend whom Oliver first met at Eton), Lord Berners, Noel Coward, John Betjeman, Harold Acton, Nancy Mitford, Edith Sitwell, Stephen Tennant, Rex Whistler and Evelyn Waugh, who famously satirised their exploits in the 1930s novel Vile Bodies. Having witnessed WW1, the 20s and 30s were a time of new freedom for these wealthy, artistic group of high society friends and acquaintances, who knew only too well how short life could be.The personal copy of Begum Ra'ana Liaquat Ali Khan (1905-1990), who was a Pakistani diplomat and the country's first female governor.She was born Sheila Irene Pant on 13 February 1905 in Almora, British India (today's India), to a Brahmin family who had converted to Christianity two generations prior.The personal copy of Begum Ra'ana Liaquat Ali Khan (1905-1990), who was a Pakistani diplomat and the country's first female governor.Academically brilliant, she graduated from the University of Lucknow in 1927 with bachelor's degrees in economics and theology. She obtained a double master's degree in economics and sociology in 1929. In 1931, she became professor of economics at Indraprastha College in Delhi, where she met her future husband, lawyer Liaquat Ali Khan, when he visited to deliver a lecture on law.The couple married in 1932, despite her family's objection. The bride converted to Islam and took the name Begum Ra'ana. She became involved with the Muslim League, devoting herself to creating political consciousness among the Muslim women in British India.After the Partition in 1947, Liaquat Ali Khan became Pakistan's first prime minister. As the first First Lady of Pakistan, Begum Ra'ana founded or helped establish organisations that uplifted women's rights and women's public role, such as the Pakistan Women's National Guard (PWNG), the Women's Naval Reserves and All Pakistan Women's Association (APWA).

At the time of the inscription, Messel was designing the sets and costumes for Cukor's Romeo and Juliet (1936), which was nominated for four Osca…rs. This scarce deluxe copy is number 18 of 50 deluxe copies signed by Messel and Laver on handmade paper with two extra colour plates. It features the costumes, set designs, and masks created by Oliver Messel (1904-1978) from the first decade of his career. Some of the designs featured include C. B. Cochran's Helen (1932), The Miracle (1932), and his Revues of 1930 and 1931. Messel worked with Cukor again on Caesar and Cleopatra (1946). George Cukor (1899-1983) directed A Star is Born (1954), Little Women (1933) and My Fair Lady (1964), for which he won an Academy Award. This copy has Cukor's attractive Paul Landacre bookplate on the front pastedown. Quarto. Colour frontispiece and 57 plates (9 in colour). Original vellum, spine lettered in black and white, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. With original acetate jacket lettered in black and white with vignette of costumed woman. Small chip to foot of spine, boards sprung, short tear to front blank; jacket price-clipped, slightly yellowed with loss to head and foot of spine, rear flap lacking: A very good copy in a just about very good jacket.
