By the mid 1890s, he was a member of the Royal Photographic Society living in London, making portraits of the fashionable set. He exhibited widely with the Pictorialists in Paris, London, New York, among others, and was a Fellow of the Council of the Photo-Secession. By 1914, living in New York, he was appointed as the official fashion photographer for Vogue. At the end of the first world war, he returns to Paris, only to returned to the United States at the outbreak of World War II.
