Erste Ausgabe. - Theodor Meynert (1833-1892) galt neben Paul Flechsig in Leipzig als der führende europäische Neuroanatom. Er war Lehrer u.a. von Sigmund Freud. "M.s Leben war… der Aufgabe gewidmet, die Psychiatrie aus der romantisch-spekulativen Betrachtungsweise bzw. der reinen Empirie in den Rang einer naturwissenschaftlichen Disziplin zu erheben. Dazu war es erforderlich, das Gehirn in seinem Aufbau zu studieren und zu untersuchen, inwiefern dessen Schädigung unmittelbar psychische Leistungsstörungen bewirkt. Danach wollte M. versuchen, aus dem Bau des Gehirns Schlüsse auf dessen Funktionen zu ziehen. Er gab mit seinen morphologischen Befunden und Deutungen mehr als einer Generation Anregung für ihre Forscherarbeit." (vgl.
