"Diplomatic and Anecdotal Political Life of Ottone di Bismarck."Ernesto Mezzabotta (1852-1901). "Little is known about his childhood and education. He attended literature courses at the Sapienza University of Rome and supported himself by giving private lessons. Labriola speaks of him in a letter, describing him as a Darwinian Catholic, an encyclopedic, an employee of a Ministry where he rarely showed up to work. In 1874 he entered the Alessandrina Library as librarian, and remained there for nine years. He became passionate about journalism and began to frequent the cafes that were the haunt of the main Roman journalists. He managed to publish something on Fanfulla, using various pseudonyms, and thus began an intense activity that led him to collaborate with numerous newspapers of the time: Fanfulla, Capitan Fracassa, Il Bersagliere, Il Messaggero, La Domenica Letteraria. He also founded some periodicals, La Scintilla and Il Muschettiere among others, short-lived due to lack of funds. In 1893 he worked for a year at the National Library of Rome, badly tolerated by the director D. Gnoli, then he moved to Casanatense. In the meantime he became passionate about reading stories from the past with murky plots and tragic outcomes. Gifted with ease of writing, he then began to devote himself to the writing of popular novels, relying on the publisher Perino, specialized in that kind of publications.
