Il sistema nervoso (centrale e periferico) raccoglie informazioni dall'ambiente, le elabora e governa le azioni conseguenti. Interagire con esso ha un enorme i…mpatto per la comprensione, prevenzione, diagnosi e terapia delle patologie neurologiche. Per interagire, sono fondamentali le neurotecnologie. Occorre progettare dispositivi (microtrasduttori) per leggere i segnali originati dal sistema nervoso e stimolare i neuroni (o piccole reti di neuroni) opportunamente. Non si può poi fare a meno di modelli semplificati di reti di neuroni ingegnerizzate in vitro a differenti livelli di complessità (es. colture di neuroni, organoidi). Senza considerare poi modelli matematici in silico come strumento ulteriore di reverese engineering; così come il supporto dell'intelligenza artificiale grazie a nuovi algoritmi bioispirati basati sulle neuroscienze. Quanto sopra porta a sviluppare soluzioni tecnologiche per ripristinare le funzioni neurali compromesse, sia a livello centrale (neuromodulazione come la deep brain stimulation) sia a livello periferico (neuroprotesi impiantate) per interfacciare protesi e per facilitare il riapprendimento e la neuroriabilitazione. Il presente volume contiene i contributi di esperti italiani e internazionali afferenti non solo alla bioingegneria ma anche a discipline affini, partecipanti alla XLIII Scuola Annuale di Bioingegneria. Ne emerge un quadro altamente interdisciplinare e sinergico, con una forte attenzione alle tematiche etiche interconnesse, necessarie per affrontare le sfide della complessità del sistema nervoso.
