Friedrich Froebel's invention of the kindergarten in the nineteenth century and Rudolf Steiner's educational theory at the start of the twentieth century had enormous consequences for modern art--above all in their theorizings of childhood creativity. Paul Klee in particular was greatly influenced by their work and the particular qualities of children's art, as his finger paintings and puppets, as well as his writings, attest. Following Klee's lead, and in the wake of the Second World War, the loose collective of artists known as CoBrA (from the initials of the members' home cities of Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam) embraced childhood creativity as a redemptive freedom against the comparative formal strictures of earlier avant gardes. This volume examines the dialogue that Karel Appel, Constant, Corneille, Christian Dotremont, Asger Jorn and Joseph Noiret forged with the art of Paul Klee, underlining Klee's more playful and mischievous qualities.…

Hand-set in Monotype Garamond, one of 145 copies on mould-made pure rag paper, this copy numbered 94. All edges untrimmed. Some smoke marking to wrappers and page edges, with associated smoke odour, otherwise internally bright and clean. Signed by the author on the half title. From the estate of Olwyn Hughes, recently dispersed; the smoke damage is the result of an errant cigarette dropped by Olwyn down the back of her sofa, which caused a serious fire. Olwyn Hughes (1928-2016) was a translator, agent and literary executor who had worked in Paris for NATO, Martonplay, and King Peter II of Yugoslavia, among others. After the death of her sister-in-law Sylvia Plath, she returned to England to assist her brother, Ted Hughes, raise his young children, though also took over the management of both his career and Plath's literary estate. While she did have some other clients as a literary agent, including Jean Rhys, much of the rest of her life was dedicated to preserving - and defending - both Plath and Hughes. Size: Tall 8vo. …
