An absolutely outstanding Fine first edition of Captain Beaky, the charming and now-classic collection of children's poetry written by Jeremy Lloyd and beautifully illustrated by Keith Michell. This is the true original 1976/1977 hardcover issue (Chappell & Company Limited) — not a later reprint, paperback or annual — complete with the vibrant rainbow-lettered title page, the full list of 28 poems, red endpapers featuring delicate white line drawings of every animal character, and the original author and illustrator photographs and biographies printed on the final page. The Author — Jeremy Lloyd Jeremy Lloyd (1930-2014) was a highly acclaimed English writer, screenwriter, poet and actor. He is best known as the co-creator (with David Croft) of two of Britain's most beloved television sitcoms: Are You Being Served? (1972-1985) and 'Allo 'Allo! (1982-1992). After beginning his career as an actor in the 1960s (including appearances in Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In and films such as School for Scoundrels), Lloyd turned to writing. Captain Beaky was a personal passion project; the poems and characters "simply appeared in his head" and he described the book as "the best thing I've ever done" and "the most pure". The verses were later set to music by Jim Parker, resulting in a best-selling album featuring stars including Twiggy, Harry Secombe and Peter Sellers, plus a UK Top 5 hit single. Lloyd was awarded the OBE for services to comedy and literature. The Illustrator — Keith Michell Keith Michell (1926-2015) was a multi-talented Australian-born actor, stage director, singer and acclaimed watercolour artist. Trained at the Adelaide School of Arts and Crafts, he became one of Britain's leading Shakespearean and musical-theatre performers and is forever remembered for his Emmy-winning portrayal of Henry VIII in the landmark 1970 BBC series The Six Wives of Henry VIII (and its feature-film sequel). He also served as Artistic Director of the Chichester Festival Theatre. Michell's distinctive ink-and-watercolour style perfectly captures the whimsical spirit of Lloyd's poems; the artist had several solo exhibitions of his paintings, and he personally sang several tracks on the Captain Beaky album.
