Heute, da die Menschheit das kosmische Zeitalter zu betreten begonnen hat, können wir sagen, den ersten drei der genannten "Elemente" entsprechen der feste, flüssige und gasförmige Zustand der Stoffe, und dem vierten, dem Feuer, entspricht das im kosmischen Raum vorherrschende Plasma. Prof. Dr. Mierdel führt mit seinem Buch "Was ist Plasma?" in die Welt des sogenannten vierten Aggregatzustandes ein. Mit gespanntem Interesse kann man seinen zwingendlogischen Gedankengängen folgen, denn zahlreiche bildhafte Darstellungen aus dem täglichen Leben erleichtern das Verständnis komplizierter Vorgänge im ionisierten Gas. Ehe man jedoch das Plasma technisch nutzen kann, müssen die Gesetzmäßigkeiten seiner Natur erklärt sein.
