Censorship was tight regarding the occupation, forbidding criticism of Americans, leading Kurosawa to slip in references to the US presence in Japan, satirizing jazz, "pan pan" girls (unlicensed prostitutes catering to American soldiers), and Western clothing and hairstyles. Based on a story by novelist Juro Miyoshi, originally released in 1937 as two parts, "Saga of the Vagabonds Part One Tiger Wolf" and "Saga of the Vagabonds Part Two Forward at Dawn." Toshiro Mifune plays a feudal bandit accused of stealing money he was entrusted and assembles a revenge party to storm the family castle and attack his brother who betrayed him. Original lithograph poster for a film retrospective dedicated to the work of Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune. Boldly signed in thick black felt pen by Toshiro Mifune in both Japanese characters and in English and dated by him Ò1983Ó. Fine fresh condition. Mifune appeared in person on the first two days of the event which was held at the Film Center in Chicago on May 7 - 27, 1983. Mounted onto a half-inch thick cardboard backing with black cloth tape border, 21 1/4Ó x 19Ó. The poster is a striking graphic portrait of Mifune in historic traditional Japanese costume in grays, black, and cream on a yellow background with ÒToshiro Mifune: A Living LegendÓ printed along the top border. Toshiro Mifune (1920 - 1997) starred in many films by the great director, Akira Kurosawa including Rashomon and Seven Samurai. In his later years Mifune gained new fame in the American television miniseries adaptation of the James Clavell novel Shogun (1980) as Lord Yoshi Toranaga with Richard Chamberlain as English navigator William Adams who becomes deeply involved in the political games in feudal Japan.
