Damals haben sich einige Geschäftsleute aus der kleinen Gemeinde Galveston zusammengefunden, um einen nationalen Badeanzug-Wettbewerb (Ann…ual Bathing Girl Revue) ins Leben zu rufen. Es ging vor allem darum, die Touristen in das texanische Städtchen zu locken. Dennoch sahen sich schon damals die Verantwortlichen als Konkurrenten zum Wettbewerb der Miss America, die in Atlantic City gewählt wurde. 1926 wurde die Veranstaltung international ausgetragen und bekam den Titel Miss Universe. Bis 1929 fand der Wettbewerb in den USA statt, 1930 kam Brasilien (Rio de Janeiro) an die Reihe, 1932 folgten Spa (Belgien) und 1935 Brüssel (während der Weltausstellung). Erst ab 1930 wurde die Miss Universe-Wahl also richtig international. Sie erhielt zunächst nur eine begrenzte Aufmerksamkeit - dies änderte sich jedoch gründlich, als nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg die sich zunehmend in Zeitungen, Zeitschriften und Magazine ausbreitenden Fotoreportagen auch dieses Thema aufgriffen. Fotografen hatten die Macht, Sternchen zu Stars zu machen: Möglicherweise wäre eine Norma Baker weiterhin unbekannt geblieben, wäre sie nicht in dem Kalender Golden Dreams 1949 in einer für damalige Zeiten relativ lasziven Pose abgelichtet worden. Acht Millionen mal wurde der Kalender verkauft; die Karriere, nun unter dem Namen Marilyn Monroe, nahm ihren Lauf. Ab 1955 machte dann die erste Fernsehübertragung dem gedruckten Bild Konkurrenz: Die Fotografie konnte nur ausgewählte Augenblicke des Wettbewerbs wiedergeben, das Fernsehen war der fotografischen Berichterstattung eindeutig überlegen. Ab 1960 übertrug der amerikanische Sender CBS den "Paris-Streit" direkt in die Wohnzimmer in den USA und in Europa. 2005 haben laut Veranstalter über eine Milliarde Fernsehzuschauer den Wettbewerb im Fernsehen verfolgt.
