Trade Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Gage, Thomas Mrs (Kemble, Margaret - Cover Illustration (illustratore). First Edition. 342 Pages with a Nine-page Comprehensive Index. This is a catalogue of an Exhibition held at the National Portrait Gallery, October 9, 1987 to January 10, 1988. A blank endpaper in front of the half-title page is missing. Otherwise a tight book with flawless interior text and illustration pages. On exhibit were both color and black-and-white portraits. Having one's portrait taken in the eighteenth century was no small matter. Today we take photographic portraiture as a matter of course, and even in the early nineteenth century one could have inexpensive silhouettes made at comparatively low cost; but in the 1700s portraits were not cheap, and required an investment of time for both sitter and artist. Even though portraiture was the predominant form of painting in the colonies, the number of actual portraits was never great, and a good many of those that were painted must have disappeared in moving, damaged or destroyed in fires, or otherwise lost. Scholars are fortunate to have access to records left by artists and their subjects, and along with other documents of the period they have been able to reconstruct a more complete account of the practice of portraiture before American Independence than before. Two of these scholars, Ellen G. Miles of the National Portrait Gallery staff, and Richard H. Saunders of Middlebury College, have brought their special knowledge to bear on this book and exhibition. In this catalogue there are 35 color and 160 black and white plates. Included are the essays The Portrait in America: 1700-1750 with 47 notes by Saunders and The Portrait in America 1750-1776 with 204 notes by Ellen Miles. Contents: Foreword by Alan Fern, Acknowledgments, Lenders to the Exhibition, Introduction, The Portrait in America 1700-1750 by Richard Saunders, The Portrait in America 1750-1776 by Ellen Miles, Catalogue of the Exhibition, and Bibliography.

Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good Plus. 1st Edition. First Printing as confirmed by McBride. The book would be fine save for shelf wear along bottom of boards and text block, slight translucent spotting of front lower text block. Else book is free of internal marking, spine is tight, boards rigid and tips are pointed. While the jacket has its price on the back flap, it has general wear all over, loss and small chipping at most edges, especially along spine and at top and bottom of spine. Actually looks quite smart in its shiny new plastic cover. Shipping box is suitable for wrapping with a non-price listed purchase order inside along with biodegradable packing.
