Born in Geneva on 6 October 1968 Lives and works in Buenos Aires (Argentina) and Chiasso (Switzerland). For Minelli, photography is an instrument for investigating the people and places making up his world. He alternates within a twin-theme register: portrait/self-portrait and urban reality. Minelli has over the years and with the rigour of a scientific researcher traced out a sample of contemporary society in which ethics and aesthetics are closely linked, highlighting the typical contradictions and contrasts. With the series produced in Chiasso, Notturni 1994/96, he first won the Swiss Federal Prize for Applied Arts (Bern, 1996), and the offer of an artists residency at the Swiss Cultural Institute in Rome (1998/99). At the end of 1999 he moved to Buenos Aires in Argentina, where he currently lives, with alternating periods in Ticino. The Federal Prize for Applied Arts (Bern) was also awarded to him in 1999 and 2002. In 2002 the UBS Anniversary Foundation recognised his work with a bursary for artists (Werkjahr). Minelli has held individual exhibitions in various Museums, Contemporary Art Centres and Art Galleries in different parts of the world and has participated in more than 80 collective exhibitions in various far flung cities, for example: Almaty, Buenos Aires, Rotterdam, Berlin, Cracow, Rosario, San Paolo, Miami, Basel, Mexico City, Bogota, Medellin, Turin, New York, Rome, Zurich, Geneva, Liverpool, Asunción in Paraguay, Santiago in Chile, etc. In 2008 he won the Swiss Art Awards (Basel). In 2009/2010 he spent six months living in Paris at the Cité des Arts (Atelier Visarte Switzerland) and in 2012, the Zuger Kulturstiftung Landis & Gyr Foundation offered him the chance of a six-month artists residency in Berlin. In 2010 Codax Publisher and JRP Ringier published a work edited by Tobia Bezzola, entitled: The Skin of the cities. The New York University, NYU, Department of Art & Public Policy The Tisch Initiative for Creative Research Global Institute for Advanced Study selected him to participate in the 2016-2018 biennium in the project Critical Collaborations.…
