Aggiungi al carrello12mo, 3 pp. Text clear and complete. Fair, on aged paper. 'Mr Westmacott [the sculptor Richard Westmacott the younger?]' has called on him, and he has 'shown him the settlement all down my Wall - I told him that you had seen it but did not contemplate any immediate danger - he said that Mr Valpy [Henry Valpy (fl.1851-1885) of the architects Burrell & Valpy] was out of town'. Westmacott will write to Valpy, as he thinks there ought to be 'a conference with' Lakyn, who 'should be requested to make a report'. The 'suggestion' Newton has made 'as to the Iron ties will be indispensable - & furthermore that the East wall near door to me should be rebuilt - as it must have weakened the North East angle'. The 'wall of Mr Slades house' has fallen down 'with a tremendous crash - while they were digging for the underpinning' [according to the Survey of London, Stephen Slade lived at 8 Argyle Street from 1819 to 1864]. From what Newton sees 'as to a preparation for a Wall' he fears that the builders 'intend to come beyond the opening of my light'. Asks Lakyn to 'look in' if he 'should be coming this way'. Newton moved from 6 Argyle Street, where he had lived since 1820, in 1866.

Aggiungi al carrello4pp, 16mo. Bifolium on light-green paper. In good condition, lightly aged. The letter begins: 'My Dear Miss de Witte | Of course I found the Yankee Poems directly after You were Gone too carefully put by. Do not put mine away too carefully as I want You to really read them. (Poetry of France) The sad lines of Marguerite d'Ecosse (in the notes at the end) are original & perhaps will stroke You as the mournful Subject did me. The lines have been translated into German French &c.' The news of the family the de Witte named has made her 'heart ache', and as Costello is sure she and her 'kind Mamma do something to help them', she asks her to 'let them have the enclosed trifle. It is nothing but, being unexpected, and sure to be useful in some way, may be acceptable'. She asks her to 'say nothing about it to any one as it is of no Consequence and I coul dnot offer it except with other Contributions'. She will 'look for the Scandinavian poetry & may find it. | Longfellow gives some in his Poets of Europe'. She ends in hopes of hearing 'better news of colds &c'.

Aggiungi al carrello(1802-75) with Carlisle and Newcastle connections. The recipient (1794-1860) was a miniature-painter and member of the Royal Academy. Both letters in poor condition, on discoloured, worn and stained paper, but with no loss to text. In LETTER ONE (two pages, 12mo) he states his willingness to meet Ross 'to talk over the matter to whicy your letter of yesterday refers', undertaking to 'enage with Mr. Thorburn to meet us'. LETTER TWO (four pages, 12mo) begins 'I called upon you last evening to report progress and to enquire if you had received any names for our list since the munificent sub[scriptio]n of Sir George Hayter'. He names the eleven men who have so far subscribed, including H. Cruikshank, A. E. Chalon, J. J. Chalon and Sir W. J. Newton. 'I am much gratified by the kindly feeling of the Messrs. Chalon & Sir Wm Newton - Mr. Cruikshank will leave the amount of his subn. for consideration when he knows what money may be required - his remark was "from five to eight pounds"! a most liberal offer!! and it will evidently be given with all his heart'. 'We are now firmly under way and with a little exertion, I think we have the prospect of making it a most unanimous demonstration of kindly feeling amongst the leading professors of his own branch of Art'. Both items signed 'Thos Carrick'.

Aggiungi al carrelloAn uncommon signature of a neglected artist. Hawkins was a founding member of the Society of British Artists, exhibiting there prolifically from 1824 to 1881. He also showed at the Royal Academy eight times between 1822 and 1849. (See Holmes's entry in the Oxford DNB.) On 14 cm square piece of watermarked wove paper, cut from a frank. The letter is written on the reverse of the cover, which is laid out in the customary way: 'London third July 1838 / Wm. Loney Esq / Macclesfield.' With red dated postmark, and signed in the customary way at bottom left: 'John [Baron?]'. In fair condition, lightly aged, with traces of blue paper mount adhering to the cover side. The letter reads: 'My dear Sir / Our friend James Holmes requested me to preserve a Frank for the inclosed, I have done so, but have unfortunately upset a bottle of varnish over the letter - which accounts for its being in such a filthy state, which I trust you will excuse. - I am truly happy to hear from Roe - that you are well and as happy as can to [sic] expected - I am painting a portrait of Mr Roe which I think promises to be very successful - I trust you will give me a call when you come to Town / believe me / most truly yours &c / Henry Hawkins'.

Aggiungi al carrelloAccording to his entry in the Oxford DNB, 'In 1844 Lover abandoned miniature painting as a result of failing eyesight but continued to paint and exhibit landscapes. He invented a new form of entertainment which he called Irish Evenings, a monologue of songs, recitations, and stories, all of his own composition. These he performed at the Princess's Concert Rooms, London.' Between 1846 and 1848 he toured North America with great success. 3pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged, with minor traces of mount adhering to blank reverse of second leaf. Folded twice. The letter begins: 'Mr. Lover, with much respect and sincere thanks to Sir Thomas & Lady Cullum for the honor they so kindly propose to him, regrets that the shortness of his stay and urgency of his occupation interfere to prevent his enjoying the pleasure which the acceptance of Sir Thomas and Lady Cullum's invitation would cause him.' He explains that he has sung 'at Hanover Square Rooms on Monday at Cambridge last night and, after travelling to-day and his exertion of this evening, with an early entertaintment [sic] tomorrow, before him an immediate retirement to rest after this evenings exertion is indispensible'. Consequently he must 'content himself with the Hotel of Bury instead of enjoying the honor of the hospitality of Hardwicke [sic]'. He hopes that 'Sir Thomas will assure Mr. [Petre?] how sensible Mr Lover is of the honor of his invitation, but as Mr. Lover, is obliged on his days of public engagement to dine very early, and very sparingly, he cannot have the pleasure of being made Mr. [Petre's?] guest'.
