Aggiungi al carrelloMinton, John (illustratore). First edition of a revised and amended edition of two books: 'O! More Than Happy Countryman' and 'The Heart of the Country.' ( both out of print at the time of this publication ). Published by Michael Joseph, London in 1949. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine/Very Good. Dustjacket condition: Very Good/Near Fine. Clean and tightly bound for a book of this age with no marks to the page edges. The top edge stain has retained its dark green colour with no fading. There is offsetting to the front and rear end-papers and light foxing ( as is highlighted in two of the photos ). There is a small and very neat gift inscription ( also pictured ) dating from the year of publication. Publisher's compliments slip is also present. The Dustjacket with its striking design by John Minton, is in Very Good condition for a book of this age. There is some rubbing and creasing mainly to the lower edge, with a small amount of loss ( less than 0.5 cm ) at the base of the spine. Otherwise, there is no fading, foxing or discolouration. Not Price-clipped. Publisher's price of 12s 6d. The book is signed by both the author and the illustrator without dedication to the title page. There are forty-seven attractive line drawings by Minton throughout the book. This a rare and charming book with essays and observations on country life from a long lost age. Apparently, the county of Kent and in particular the village of Chart Sutton near Maidstone was the inspiration for John Minton's illustrations. Overall a Very Good to Near Fine book and hard to find in this condition and with the double signature.

Aggiungi al carrelloLondon: John Lehmann. 1958. 8vo. Original oatmeal cloth lettered in gilt over ornamental brown lettering piece to spine, in jacket designed byJohn Minton; pp. 207, [1, (publisher's advertisements)], two-page frontispiece, illustrations throughout; light toning to fore-edge of textblock, a couple of tiny marks to lower edge, small black ink mark (c. 4 mm) to cloth at lower edge of rear panel, front flap of jacket darkened to outer edge; half-title signed by Elizabeth David in blue ink, neat contemporary gift inscription to upper corner of front free endpaper; a lovely bright, near fine copy in a notably sharp, clean example of the wrapper.A lovely copy of the second, revised edition of this pioneering traversal of French cuisine, signed by Elizabeth David and with a bright example of the striking John Minton wrapper. Following the success of A Book of Mediterranean Food, David's publisher, John Lehmann, swiftly commissioned its sequel, this time turning to the dishes of rural France. French Country Cooking was first published in 1951, while food rationing was still in place. In an essay on David, Julian Barnes writes that 'readers [of David's early books] were inevitably indulging in a little light gastroporn. If male adolescents of the time consumed girlie magazines while waiting for the real thing, British domestic cooks had a few panting years to endure before the garlic and basil became available and olive oil was liberated from the chemist's.'Dedicated to the author's mother, French Country Cooking was clearly a labour of love as well as a feat of scholarship, introducing English readers to a rich diversity of French cuisine from pheasant soup of the Basque country to Lyonnaise Poulet a la Creme. Chapters are devoted to soups, fish, eggs, luncheon, supper and family dishes, meat, poultry, game, vegetables, sweets, sauces and preserves. 'E.D. wrote as she cooked: with simplicity, purity, colour, self-effacing authority, and a respect for tradition' (Barnes).Once again, John Minton was recruited for the illustrations. His radiant jacket for the Mediterranean book was a hard act to follow, but the kitchen interior he conjured, complete with its view through an open door, is equally special. See Barnes, 'The Land Without Brussels Sprouts', in Something to Declare (2002).

Aggiungi al carrelloFIRST EDITION, frontispiece, title-page design and drawings throughout by John Minton (many full-page and some colour-printed), title-page printed in green and black, pp. 189, royal 8vo, original canary yellow cloth, backstrip lettered in gilt against a green ground with decorations in gilt at either end, the lettering a little rubbed, corners at head gently knocked, very faint mark to upper board, very faint tape shadows to free endpapers, the dustjacket with an overall design by John Minton, a little chipped at corners and ends of backstrip panel, the latter a little tatty at foot with some external tape repair to tears, the same at head of upper joint-fold, very good. Inscribed by John Minton on the flyleaf, in his distinctive hand: 'Kenneth - from Johnny, Nov. 1948'. The recipient was Kenneth Lawrence, with whom Minton had been at Reading School in the 1930s - hence, perhaps, the use of a familiar form of his name, not generally used in his adult life. The pair remained close, with Lawrence receiving numerous letters and artworks from Minton before the latter's early death in 1957. Ross's travel narrative and poetry combine with Minton's wonderful illustrations to achieve an elegant and highly distinctive work, one of the most admired works of illustration in its era; presentation copies are uncommon.
