One of Sir Bohun Chantrey's great passions in life is the stories of Sherlock Holmes. To celebrate the great man's anniversary, he throws a party at which the guests are instructed to come as characters from the detective stories. But several of the guests are more interested in Sir Bohun's money, and when he announces that he is to marry a poor governess, things take a turn for the worse, not least when the Hound of the Baskervilles turns up. Fortunately the incomparable detective Mrs Bradley and her secretary Laura are amongst the guests and ready to investigate the deepening mystery. Opinionated, unconventional, unafraid. If you like Poirot and Miss Marple, you'll love Mrs Bradley. Source: Publisher.…

Very good in a good only dust jacket (some dampstaining to the upper half of the back cover of the dj, minor crinkling to the upper corners of several leaves, but no staining).…

Condizione: FINE. Book club edition. Contains a new introduction by Patricia Craig and Mary Cadogan. The fourth in the series of 66 books which Mitchell wrote featuring Mrs (later Dame) Bradley, this was originally published in 1932. From the dj: 'Mrs. Bradley, a unique heroine and one of the most memorable personalities in crime fiction, excels herself in this classic and hilarious whodunit, proving that cosy English villages can be murderously peaceful.' 183 pp. Very near fine in a like dustjacket.…

Condizione: FAIR. First edition. Condizione: VERY GOOD. First US printing. Set at a women's agriculture college, this 31st novel in the series featuring the psychoanalyst and amateur detective Dame Beatrice Lestrange Bradley is considered one of Mitchell's best. Condizione: GOOD. First printing. One of three novels in this series featuring Beatrice Adela Lestrange Bradley, a psychoanalyst and author published posthumously. Mitchell was - along with other female members of the Detection Club - Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Sayers - one of the most prominent authors of that era, as well as one of the most long-lived and prolific. She was unique in having a professional woman as her detective. Set at school for boys where the headmaster becomes concerned when one of his senior staff disappears - along with the funds he had collected from students and faculty to fund a school trip to Greece. Surprisingly uncommon. 208 pp. Ex-library with the usual markings, some spine slant, in a near fine unmarked dust jacket.…

Condizione: NEAR FINE. First thus. Reissue of Mitchell's thirteenth novel featuring Mrs Bradley, originally published in 1941. Definitely one of her best novels and probably the most accessible, this is both amusing and satisfying to read, with a complicated plot ranging from boys missing from a reformatory, to an old lady strangling on grated carrots, poltergiests, and a house built on an ancient foundation. This book introduces Mrs Bradley's son Ferdinand Lestrange, his wife Caroline and their seven year old son, Derek, and so it reveals her character in a gentler, more mellow light. With a new introduction by Patricia Craig and Mary Cadogan. 208 pp. Near fine in a very near fine dust jacket (remainder line, toning to the pages).…

Condizione: NEAR FINE. First printing. The 35th book in this series featuring Beatrice Adela Lestrange Bradley, a polymathic psychoanalyst and author. Mitchell was - along with other female members of the Detection Club - Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Sayers - one of the most prominent authors of that era, as well as one of the most long-lived and prolific. She was unique in having a professional woman as her detective. "Mitchell was a schoolteacher who believed in the idea of the professional, progressive woman. Her title character was controversial and emancipated, and even considered murder justifiable if the occasion demanded. , , Her murder cases have ambiguous solutions, and an air of the supernatural is never entirely banished from them. Her plots are on the farthest side of credulity, but to worry about realism is to miss the fun of her storytelling." (Christopher Fowler) This novel begins on a nostalgic note as her assistant Laura, who has accompanied Dame Beatrice to a conference in Edinburgh, remembers scenes from her childhood in Scotland. 254 pp. Near fine in black boards with silver gilt lettering on the spine, no dust jacket.…

Condizione: FAIR. First printing. Mrs. Bradley is spending Christmas with her newly married nephew Jonathan and his wife Deb at their home in the Cotswolds. There she hears the story of a local apparition: the ghost of a country parson, it is said, can sometimes be seen at night slung over the gate leading to a grouping of trees called Groaning Spinney. After the holidays, villagers begin to receive anonymous poison pen letters and soon a real corpse is found on the gate - and as the spring thaw sets in, another body is found. 263 pp. Fair condition only in black cloth with silver lettering. Dampness to the upper corner of the boards has caused significant bleeding the endpapers and first few pages in the beginning and end, and part of the textblock edge. Still, this is a readable copy of a rather scarce title and one of her most appealing books.…

Condizione: VERY GOOD. First printing. Suprisingly uncommon later mystery featuring Mitchell's formindable sleuth, Dame Beatrice Lestrange Bradley, one which is less a conventional puzzle and more a character study, building tension slowly as Dame Beatrice's sharp memory and observations unravel a decades-old mystery involving themes of inheritance, historical allusions (to figures like A.C. Swinburne and T.E. Lawrence), and the world of amateur dramatics. 191 pp. Very good in very good dust jacket (a tight and clean copy, number stamped on copyright page, slight sunning to spine of dj, small chip to bottom edge of front cover of dj.).…

Condizione: NEAR FINE. First printing. A later title in this series featuring Dame Beatrice Lestrange Bradley, and - in this case, her grandniece Fenella Lestrange who discovers five recent skeletons in the crypt beneath an old inn. A novel "steeped in British folklore, and the secret midnight rituals in which the whole town apparently participates carry a dark fascination. Representations of pagan fertility rites, the Green Man, Zodiac symbols, and water and tree worship can be found here, most of it based on legend and lore, some of it springing from Miss Mitchell's wonderful imagination. . . The old lady is at her most benign here, and there's not a trace of her shrieking, lively former self from the days before the bestowment of the royal title. But even with a subdued Dame Beatrice, Gladys Mitchell offers such unique stories with such bizarre elements that the straightforward telling merely emphasizes the strange world in which Fenella finds herself." (Jason Half) 222 pp. Near fine in near fine dust jacket (hint of spine slant).…
