Der Stand der Tehcnik bei er Hochgeschwindigkeitsübertragung wird ebenso dargestellt wie der Einsatz von Glasfasern in der Messtechnik. (Biblio) Prof. Dr. Fedor Mitschke war als Postdoc 1985-86 an den Bell Laboratories an Pionierarbeiten zu Solitonen in Glasfasern beteiligt. Es folgten die Habilitation in Hannover, eine Lehrstuhlvertretung in München, sowie Tätigkeiten als Privatdozent und außerplanmäßiger Professor in Hannover. 1994 wechselte er auf eine Professur an der Universität Münster. Seit 1997 ist er Professor für "Experimentalphysik: Optik" an der Universität Rostock. Das vorliegende Buch entstand aus Vorlesungen, die er in Hannover, Münster, Rostock und - als Gastprofessor - in Luleå (Schweden) gehalten hat.
