Four Volume Set; A really attractive four volume set, which combines two volumes in each book, for a complete history of La Bastille. (In this description, Volume denotes the actual book, not the contents, since each book is dual-volume.) Arnould and Pujol are the original author…s, joined by Maquet in the third volume. The publication date of the first volume is 1844; the second, 1847, the third, 1845, and the last 1847. I don't understand the discrepancy here and clearly can't claim that these are first editions; the entire set is called "Magnificent Edition", and it is quite beautiful, with several steel engravings per volume, each with a tissue guard. The books are in remarkably good shape. They carry a beautful 19th century bookplate on the front endpaper of each bound volume, and the first and fourth volumes have been gift-inscribed in a very classic hand by the editor, Monsieur de la Chatre, The name Langlois also appears, perhaps that of the original owner. The inscriptions are dated 1847. The books have been bound in pebbled red buckram, with red leather spines and gold stampings. The bindings are sound, with minor scuffing and edgwear. The first volume has a small stain on the front board. The book was printed on high-quality paper, which has not deteriorated in the least. There is a light water stain at the beginning of the fifth volume which has done no harm. Otherwise, I see no signs of use, and the tissue guards, which are fragile, are in great shape. The final volume has a ribbon. Surcharge on International shipping, but I'll work with you on the price.
