The Paris Academy had offered a prize for research on the geometrical theory of polyhedrons, and in 1858 Möbius began to prepare an essay on this subject. The results of his essay were for the most part given in two important papers: his 'Theorie der elementaren Verwandtschaft' of 1863 and his 'Ueber die Bestimmung des Inhaltes eines Polyëders' of 1865.
