These early anatomical revelations, which date from the 14th century when the Pope of Rome first granted the University of Bologna permission to dissect a human body, were far from correct, but were imbued with the cheerful imaginativeness of the Renaissance and the Baroque periods, particulary in the majestic engraved frontispieces. Author Harold Moe, professor emeritus of the University of Copenhagen, stresses the illustrations and interpretations of these frontispieces, but also enriches this book with biographies of the greatest anatomists and entertaining accounts of the conditions in which they worked. This fascinating book is full of medical curiosities and sublime draughtsmanship. , Danish, Year1995, Illust. B/W255, Illust. Color3, ISBN 8772455969, Code 1749. A fascinating biography of a true Renaissance man, who, even as he achieved glory for his intellectual pursuits in the fields of anatomy and the geological sciences, was the victim of the vicious political intrigues of his time. Steno ended his days in severe privation as a cleric in the Roman Catholic Church, only to be beatified after his death. Lavish illustrations of StenoÆs manuscripts and meticulous drawings, maps, portraits, architectural engravings markedly enhance this wonderful book. , English, Year1994, Illust. B/W217, Illust.
