Dort studierte er an der Universität Orientalistik; meistenteils bei den Professoren August Dillmann und Eberhard Schrader. Später wechselte Goldschmidt mit denselben Fächern an die Universität Straßburg. Hauptfächer seines Studiums waren die äthiopische Sprache und Literatur.
