Seine Sprache beeinflusste darüber hinaus stark die Entwicklung der arabischen Grammatik. Mohammed oder Mohammad sowie Muhammad, geboren zwischen 570 und 573 in Mekka; gestorben am 8. Juni 632 in Medina), war der Religionsstifter des Islam. Er gilt im Islam als Prophet und Gesandter Gottes. Mohammed war sowohl der Führer der religiösen und sozialen Bewegung als auch der Herrscher über den Machtbereich, in dem diese Religion ausgelebt wurde. Die ihm folgenden Kalifen dehnten die arabische Herrschaft über Iran, Syrien, Palästina und Ägypten aus. Abu Bakr ?Abdallah ibn Abi Quhafa as-Siddiq (geb. um 573 in Mekka; gest. 23. August 634 in Medina) war einer der ersten Anhänger des Propheten Mohammed und als Vater von Aischa bint Abi Bakr sein Schwiegervater. Nach Mohammeds Tod im Juni 632 herrschte er als dessen "Nachfolger" bzw. "Stellvertreter" (Kalif) bis 634 über die Gemeinschaft der Muslime. Die Muslime entzweiten sich über die Frage, wer berechtigt war, die Nachfolge Mohammeds nach dessen Tod anzutreten: Für die Schiiten ist ?Ali ibn Abi Talib, Vetter und Schwiegersohn des Propheten, der rechtmäßige Nachfolger Mohammeds, die Sunniten dagegen meinen, dass Abu Bakr, der die Nachfolge antrat, auch größeren Anspruch darauf hatte. Lazarus Goldschmidt, eigentl. Elieser ben Gabriel (geboren am 17. Dezember 1871 in Plungen, Russisches Kaiserreich; gestorben am 18. April 1950 in London), war ein bedeutender Orientalist und Gelehrter des Judentums. Nachdem Goldschmidt die Talmudschule Jeschiwat Slobotka in Kaunas absolviert hatte, ging er 1890 nach Berlin. Dort studierte er an der Universität Orientalistik; meistenteils bei den Professoren August Dillmann und Eberhard Schrader. Später wechselte Goldschmidt mit denselben Fächern an die Universität Straßburg. Hauptfächer seines Studiums waren die äthiopische Sprache und Literatur. Nach dem Studium ließ er sich in Berlin als Privatgelehrter nieder und beschäftigte sich intensiv mit den semitischen Sprachen und deren Literatur.
