Während sowjetische Truppen auf seine Heimat Kreisau in Schlesien vorrücken und Weggefährten gehenkt werd…en, wechselt er täglich Briefe mit seiner Frau Freya, die vom (aus einer deutschbaltischen Familie stammenden) Gefängnispfarrer Harald Poelchau unter Einsatz seines Lebens fast täglich an der Zensur vorbeigeschmuggelt werden - und der auch in fast allen Briefen namentlich genannt wird. Es geht um ihre Liebe und die Lage in Kreisau, die Situation im Gefängnis und die Vorbereitung auf den Tod, aber auch um den Widerstand und um Wege zur Rettung. - Helmuth James von Moltke (1907-1945), Begründer und führender Kopf des Kreisauer Kreises, gilt als "eine der wenigen wirklichen Lichtfiguren des deutschen Widerstandes gegen Hitler" (Volker Ullrich, DIE ZEIT). Für die "Briefe an Freya" wurde er postum mit dem Geschwister-Scholl-Preis ausgezeichnet. Freya von Moltke (1911-2010), gehörte zum Kreisauer Widerstandskreis. Seit 1990 hat sie die Umwandlung des Gutes Kreisau in eine internationale Begegnungsstätte unterstützt. Für ihr Engagement für die deutsch-polnische und die europäische Versöhnung wurde sie vielfach ausgezeichnet.
