"This is a reissue of Harold Monro's Collected Poems as they were assembled in reverse chronological order by his widow and published by Cobden-Sanderson in 1933, the year after his death. The prefatory matter to that edition is, however, here replaced by a long new biographical and critical introduction by Ruth Tomalin?based on notes dictated to her by Mrs. Alida Monro during the last weeks of her life in 1969. Some knowledge of the darker circumstances of Monro's life is essential to a reassessment of his highly individual poetry, which, as T. S. Eliot wrote, "in the end will remain because, like every other good poet, he has not simply done something better than anyone else, but done something that no one else has done at all."" Some foxing to top and fore edges. Both book and unclipped dust jacket are otherwise in excellent condition. All contents are tight and clean. Grey boards with black lettering to spine are only good with pushing/bumping to corners, a few small marks, a little patchy fading/darkening (including to spine), the odd small bump/rub to edges and a little wear (pushing/bumping/small splits/little loss) to head/tail of spine. Pages are generally clean and the binding is tight. Rough cut page edges and bottoms have been cut unevenly with a few small tears/odd patchy loss (not through text). Pages bit tanned. Few marks/odd spots of foxing to top edge of pages. Odd small mark/spot of foxing to page edges and bottoms. Very occasional small marks/scattered foxing to pages. No other faults. Extremities a little worn and some light foxing of preliminaries and and small stain at foot of some pages; otherwise a very good copy. Harold Monro (1879-1932, born in Brussels and educated at Radley and Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, published his first volume of poetry in 1906. He founded the Poetry Magazine and opened the Poetry Bookshop in Bloomsbury in 1913, encouraging young poets. This selection of his verse was made by his second wife, Alida.
