This Polyglot Bible with text in Hebrew, Greek, Latin, and Syriac was prepared under the patronage of Philip II of Spain and published by Plantin Press of Antwerp between 1569 and 1572. Benedictus Arias Montanus (1527-1598) was the editor responsible for the scholarly apparatus that established the Polyglot Bible as an achievement of scholarship. The original biblical texts filled five volumes, with commentary and language exegesis in volumes six through eight.** Montanus also created maps and images to accompany his explanatory texts. Fifteen engraved plates make up part of this Volume VIII, offering views of the Ark, of temple and palace building; and maps of the Ancient Near East that situate the tribes of Israel among their neighbors. Present also is the Orbis Tabula, a two-page map of the world drawn by Montanus.** The Orbis Montanus depicts the populating of the earth, including North and South America, by Noah's descendants whose names are given in Latin and Hebrew. This map shows a land mass in the location of Australia thirty years before the recorded European discovery of Australia. Some scholars believe that the Spanish may have sighted Australia in the 16th century and have cited this map as evidence. Montanus's representation of the world, adorned with sea monsters and Spanish caravels sailing the oceans, is one of the best known early maps.** This is the first state of the map, dated 1571, with Orbis Tabula. The bulk of the text comprises 35 leaves from the first edition of "Humanius" of which 23 leaves contain full page engravings by Abraham De Bruyn plus Pieter vander Borcht and Crispin van den Broeck. Bound in with the pages from the author are nine woodcut illustrations from unidentified 16th century German bible, one signed by Monogrammist MB. Also one copper engraving from an unidentified 18th/19th century French book of stories. Plus the engraved frontispiece of a (Huguenot?) Bible in French published by Mortier and Brunel in Amsterdam. Potential Portuguese discoveries along the northern coast of Australia Double-page engraved map, with fine hand-colour in full. This map holds a "special place in the early cartography of Australia" (Schilder). It was issued in the eighth volume of a polyglot Bible, which came to be known as the 'Sacrae Regia', printed by Christopher Plantin, and edited by Arias Benedictus Montanus between 1569 and 1572. The bible, with text in Hebrew, Greek, Latin, and Syriac, was dedicated to and largely paid for by King Philip II of Spain. Tragically, a large proportion of the entire printing of the final eighth volume was lost at sea on its way to Spain, so the first issue is very rare. Based on the cartography of Giacomo Gastaldi, the map purports to show how Noah's three sons repopulated the earth apres le deluge, but also includes a wonderful and mysterious anomaly: a landmass in the region and rough shape of northern Australia but not included in official Dutch records, until it was "sighted" during the voyage of the 'Dufykin' in 1606, therefore making a tantalizing claim for the "inclusion of Portuguese discoveries along the northern coastline, without any hypothetical southern land mass" (Clancy). The current example is the second issue of this double-hemisphere map, with no text on the verso, and the word "Gentes" added to the panel of text lower left. The mapmaker Benedictus Arias Montanus (1527-1598), a scholarly Orientalist, was commanded by King Philip II of Spain, in 1568, to supervise and edit a new polyglot edition of the Bible. Arias included parallel Hebrew text with a translation by Leon de Castro, a fellow professor of Oriental languages at Salamanca. de Castro denounced Arias to the Spanish Inquisition for "having altered the Biblical text, making too liberal use of the rabbinical writings, in disregard of the decree of the Council of Trent concerning the authenticity of the Vulgate, and confirming the Jews in their beliefs by his Chaldaic paraphrases" (Rudge). Arias was eventually freed of the charges in 1580, and thereafter mostly retired to his hermitage, but accepted the post of royal chaplain, looked after the Escorial library, and resumed his teaching of Oriental languages.
