A Paris, chez Claude Barbin, 1666 1 fort volume in-12 (153 x 95 mm | Hauteur des marges : 147 mm) de (14)-629-(1) pages, avec un portrait de l'auteur en frontispice. Reliure strictement de l'époque plein veau brun, dos à nerds orné aux petits fers dorés, tranches mouchetées de rouge. Usures à l'extrémité des coiffes. Reliure et intérieur très frais. Papier bien blanc. Très beau tirage du portrait d'après Picart et daté de 1665. Edition originale. Il est intéressant de noter que ce volume a été publié la même année (et au même moment) et chez le même libraire que les Oeuvres de Molière (édition en 2 volumes in-12 parmi les plus prisées aujourd'hui, fameuse première édition collective imprimée du vivant de Molière). Les Oeuvres de Mathieu de Montreuil ont été achevées d'imprimer le 1er avril 1666 en vertu d'un privilège royal accordé au libraire Claude Barbin le 6 mars 1666. Le privilège a été partagé par Barbin avec les libraires Thomas Jolly, Louys Billaine, Charles de Sercy et Guillaume de Luyne. Pour cette édition de 1666 des Oeuvres de Molière, Gabriel Quinet reçut un privilège le 6 mars (même jour que pour Montreuil) de cette même année, qu'il partagea avec sept autres libraires, dont Charles de Sercy et Louis Billaine. On voit donc que pour le public, les Oeuvres de Montreuil connurent, au jour près, le même processus éditorial que la première édition collective des Oeuvres de Molière. Mais quand le temps décide des succès . Molière est devenu notre grand auteur du théâtre national français quand Mathieu de Montreuil est tombé dans l'oubli. Les Oeuvres de Mathieu de Montreuil contiennent en première partie des lettres adressées à divers correspondant(e)s dont la marquise de Sévigné. A la suite se trouvent des poésies diverses (Stances, Madrigaux, Epigrammes, Sonnets, etc). Octave Uzanne tenta de tirer de l'oubli complet ce petit poète galant des Ruelles en republiant à petit nombre ses Poésies en 1878 (Paris, Librairie des Bibliophiles, Jouaust). Octave Uzanne écrit : "Le commerce des femmes est, dit-on, la meilleure école de la politesse et des belles manières. Les quelques écrivains qui se sont façonnés dans ce milieu délicat et charmant en ont conservé, pour la plupart, un charme expressif, qui semble avoir en même temps poli, arrondi et amenuisé leur style, tout en donnant à leur langage une forme plus relevée, un sens plus subtil, une tournure plus exquise, des grâces plus vives et plus soudaines. [.]". Provenance : de la bibliothèque de Bernard de Noblet qui s'est marié une première fois en 1695 puis en secondes noces en 1718. Bernard de Noblet, Marquis de Noblet d'Anglure, Comte de la Clayte &c. ancien Capitaine de Cavalerie dans le Régiment de Montgommeri, a été pourvu de l'Office de Lieutenant des Maréchaux de France au Bailliage de Mâcon par Lettres du 5 Juin 1701 (notre ex libris date de 1701 ou peu après donc). Héraldique : D'azur au sautoir d'or. Supports : deux licornes regardantes, couronne comtale. Il meurt en 1754 à l'âge de 87 ans en son château de La Clayette en Saône-et-Loire (Brionnais), province de Bourgogne (il était né vers 1667).
