First published in 1781, Moore's epistolary account derives from his European travels with Douglas Hamilton, 8th Duke of Hamilton, accompanied also by Moore's son John, later General Sir John Moore. His observations encompass Italian society, politics, religion, art, architecture, and daily life; the appearance of a fifth edition within nine years attests to the work's contemporary popularity. Contents generally clean and unmarked, with expected age toning, scattered foxing, and occasional staining; early ownership inscription to the front free endpaper and small ownership label to the front pastedown. Binding remains intact but weakened, with hinges cracked and separating. Contemporary calf rubbed and scuffed, with wear to board edges, approximately 1/3 in. loss at the head of the spine, and a further area of leather loss at mid-spine.
