Tan Boards. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. Moore, Bethuel - Frontispiece Portrait of Jonas (illustratore). Limited Private Printing, 200cc. Tan Boards. Good/No Jacket. Limited Private Printing, 200cc. Hardback. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. 21 pages; frontispiece drawing of Jonas by Bethuel Moore; " 'Table for Critics' is privately printed and limited to 200 copies; Copy No. 10, (signed in ink) E.A. Jonas." From the dedication page: " To Cale Young Rice, Credo Harris, Richard G. Knott, William H. Field, Menefee Wirgman, William Davenport--Presidents of The Arts Club who have passed the chair, and to W.K. Stewart, President in Being--these jingles are dedicated." The author pokes fun at the Club's nature and preference for theater, and has mentioned circa 30 of the members, with his impression of them (including himself) in humorous vein. Book condition: The book has some damp-staining: Close to the cover edges on three sides on the rear cover; on the bottom edge of the front cover (stains are a bit darker than the light manilla cover and page paper); internally, the stains are minor and mainly confined to the hinge areas, in the front decreasing in extent and disappearing by the dedication page; in the rear, on a blank page before the final printed page. This is an interesting insider's (Louisville newsman) view of the Arts Club in its more influential days. Cale Young Rice, W.K. Stewart, Boyd Martin and the other Club presidents listed above are still names rembered by some Louisvillians. Signed by Author(s).

(DNB) "Handbook of applied mathematics first published in 1674, including instructions for using the elementary mechanical calculating device known as "Napier's Bones," a distant forerunner of the computer, developed in the early 1600s by John Napier, the inventor of logarithms." (Swann Galleries) "Sir Jonas Moore (1617-1679) was a practical mathematician, teacher, and author who, when unable to make a living as a tutor and professor of mathematics, rose to prominence in the Restoration court of Charles II, after demonstrating his value as a surveyor and cartographer. On being appointed to the high office of Surveyor General of the King's Ordnance, he used both his income and his influence with the King to become a patron of navigational astronomy. An able mathematician (he is best known for his work in trigonometry and the development of the 'cos.' in mathematical equations), his enduring importance derives from his strong support of mathematics and astronomy which made many other mathematical and astronomical advances possible." Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition, finely bound for presentation and inscribed by the author on the title page to Arthur Capell, 1st Earl of Essex (c.1631-1683). As befitting the presentation, this copy is printed on large, thick paper. Moore (1627-1679) came to the attention of Charles I as a young man and was appointed mathematics tutor to the Duke of York. Sometime before 1649, he moved to London and, with the assistance of William Oughtred, "the figurehead of English mathematics" (ODNB), he established himself as a teacher. Networking and good fortune led to his appointment in 1669 as Surveyor-General of the Ordnance, and he was knighted during the Third Dutch War (1672-4). He made his rooms in the Tower of London a hub of scientific activity and acted as a patron to both John Flamsteed and Edmund Halley. His professional prominence coincided with the peak of Essex's political career. The earl served as lord lieutenant of Ireland from 1672 to 1677, introducing reforms to the English army. During Essex's tenure, Moore undertook, in his capacity as surveyor-general, an examination of the dependency's stores and ammunition, making recommendations to Capell on strengthening the force at the king's disposal. After returning to England, Essex's fortunes took a downward turn, his implication in the 1683 Rye House Plot ensuring that he died in disgrace in the Tower. Contemporary presentation binding of black morocco, raised bands tooled in gilt, compartments richly gilt with floral and diaper tools, boards with double gilt fillet and central gilt panel (floral roll, stylized thistle outer cornerpieces, stylized tulip inner corners), front cover with gilt crowned monogram of Earl of Essex, board edges tooled in gilt, combed marbled endpapers, edges gilt. Housed in custom quarter morocco solander box. Touches of colour to spine, sporadic light foxing, lower corner of first few leaves with tiny loss, short closed tear at head of final text leaf: still a fine copy.

As a boy Jonas Moore (1627-79) "became a clerk in Durham city" (Taylor), but resolved to follow a career in mathematics, in which ambition he was encouraged by the prominent local Shuttleworth family of Gawthorpe Hall. Brought to the attention of Charles I "when the king was in the north, he was appointed mathematical tutor to the Duke of York, but almost immediately the young prince had to leave the country". Moore published his first book"an Arithmetic" in 1647, and sometime before 1649 he moved to London and with the assistance of William Oughtred - "the figurehead of English mathematics" (ODNB) - established himself as a mathematics teacher. In 1650 he was appointed surveyor to the Duke of Bedford's fen drainage company, an advancement to which Moore "later attributed his rise in the world". On his return to the capital he set up in "Stanhope Street, on the fashionable western side of London" as a teacher of mathematics and supplier of books and instruments. Among the subjects offered was fortification, and in 1663 he was sent out with the expedition to Tangier surveying for the projected Mole. During the Second Dutch War, Moore was appointed Surveyor General of the Ordnance, "one of the principal officers of the Board of Ordnance, with particular responsibility for incoming stores and fortifications, duties which were burdensome only in wartime; Moore undertook them himself rather than appointing a deputy. From 1665 he lived near the Tower of London and from 1669 in an official house in its grounds. The Third Dutch War (1672-4) placed heavy demands upon the office; meeting them helped earn Moore his knighthood". The present work and his General Treatise of Artillery were the timely products of this period. He made his home in the Tower "a centre of scientific observation, mathematical practice and patronage, the last most notably in bringing forward the young John Flamsteed and furnishing him with with instruments as well as encouraging Edmund Halley" (Taylor). At the time of his sudden death in 1679 he was preparing a textbook for the royal Mathematical School at Christ's Hospital, of which he was governor. His library of over 2000 volumes, two thirds of them mathematical, made over £400 when sold in 1684. An important, if under-remarked, figure in the English early modern scientific world, he was described by his friend John Aubrey as "a good mathematician and a good fellow". A well-preserved copy of a desirable work. Taylor, The Mathematical Practitioners of Tudor & Stuart England, 227 & 357; Wing M2577 Octavo (174 x 108 mm). Engraved frontispiece of the sector, to be had of John Marke "at the Golden Ball in the Strand", and 9 other plates, all but one folded, these loosely inserted within guard-sheets at the rear. Contemporary speckled sheep, anachronistically but neatly rebacked in sheep with green morocco label, edges sprinkled in red and green, original endpapers retained, linen hinges, in half calf leather-entry slipcase, marbled sides. All binding work undertaken by Zaehnsdorf in 1958, typed slip mounted on the rear pastedown. Contemporary ownership inscription of James Hamilton to the title page, modern collector's plate of D.G. Mackenzie to the front pastedown. Spine a touch sunned, frontispiece just a little cropped costing one letter of the caption, and just biting the image, light browning, else very good.
