La polémica, que dividió a medió país entre defensores y detractores del extraño caso, llegó hasta los círculos más elevados. En abril, por iniciativa de la reina María Cristina, se constituyó una comisión para estudiar el caso, presidida por Ramón y Cajal y formada por oculistas, neurólogos, psiquiatras y físicos. Robert Richet, un prestigioso médico francés, quedó completamente convencido de la lucidez del joven Argamasilla. Sus poderes le parecían maravillosos, creyendo ver en ellos un nuevo horizonte para la ciencia, pues abrían la posibilidad de descubrir nuevos rayos. «Estamos en días de descubrir nuevos rayos. Nos encontramos en presencia de uno de los mayores descubrimientos de nuestros días», afirmó. Valle-Inclán, que siempre estuvo interesado en el mundo esotérico y el psiquismo, terció a favor de Argamasilla, en una histórica declaración en la que aseguraba que no todo lo que es real puede ser demostrado científicamente.
