This significant book, from the American Civil War era, provides a comprehensive analysis of gunshot wounds and other nerve injuries sustained by soldiers. The authors, acting assistant surgeons in charge of wards for diseases of the nervous system, meticulously studied nearly 120 cases to gain a deeper understanding of the immediate and long-term effects of nerve damage. Through thorough clinical histories, statistical analysis, and case studies, the authors examine the impact of nerve wounds on motor and sensory functions, as well as the associated alterations in nutrition, calorification, and electrical conductivity. By presenting a wide range of injuries, from gunshot wounds of major nerves to lesions of nerve centers, the book offers valuable insights into the pathophysiology and treatment of nerve damage. Its historical significance lies in capturing the state of knowledge about nerve injuries during a period of significant medical advancement. The authors' observations and conclusions continue to resonate with contemporary medical practice and underscore the importance of specialized care for nerve injuries. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Garrison-Morton 2167: "Mitchell, Morehouse, and Keen were army surgeons during the American Civil War; their book was the first exhaustive study of the traumatic neuroses. Includes the first description of ascending neuritis, and also of the treatment of neuritis by cold and splint rests." "The war offered the three men an unparalleled opportunity to study all types of nerve lesions--a hitherto neglected field, as they themselves noted; the present work . . . represents the first exhaustive study of traumatic nerve injuries. Its 120 case histories included a description of the severe burning pain that Mitchell later named 'causalgia', studies of post-traumatic epilepsy, and an account of the effects of injury to the superior cervical sympathetic ganglion ('Horner's syndrome') that antedated Johann Friedrich Horner's description by five years" (Norman 1519). For good summaries of this "classic of medical literature", see Spillane, Doctrine of the Nerves, pp. 363-69; and Walter, S. Weir Mitchell, Ch. 4. Freemon, Microbes and Minie Balls, p. 97. ABOUT THE PRESBYTERIAN HOSPITAL IN PHILADELPHIA: this copy was once in the library of the hospital. Quoting Wikipedia about the hospital: The hospital was "founded in 1871 by the Alliance of Philadelphia Presbyteries as a 45-bed facility on 2.5 acres (1.0 ha). The Reverend Dr. Ephraim D. Saunders, a Presbyterian minister, dedicated the land in memory of his son Courtland, who was shot and killed in service on September 21, 1862, in a battle during the Civil War. Reverend Saunders said at the dedication, 'A few days before the battle of Antietam. he [Courtland] passed with me from his tent in the forest. . . . In view of the perils of war. . . he recommended that in the case of his death. . . the property should all be donated to some prominent. charity.' The incorporators declared the purpose was 'to provide medical and surgical aid and nursing for the sick and disabled. . . .' Care and nursing was granted to the indigent of Philadelphia, funded by donations from individuals and Presbyterian churches, to fulfill its Christian mission." Quoting the archives of the University of Pennsylvania about the hospital: "A charitable institution named the Presbyterian Hospital in Philadelphia. Early in 1871, Rev. Ephraim D. Saunders, a Presbyterian minister, offered a two-and-a-half-acre property at 39th Street and Powelton Avenue to the Philadelphia Presbyterian Alliance for use as a hospital in memory of his son Courtland, who had been killed in service during the Civil War in September 1862. The Church accepted the offer and stipulated a mission for the future hospital as 'to provide for the needs of the sick and disabled regardless of race, color or creed.' On March 25, 1871, the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania approved the hospital charter and a board of trustees was formed on April 3, the same year. On July 1, 1872, the Hospital with a 45-bed facility admitted its first patient.".
