The walls all along the stairway up to ImmendorffÆs studio - located in a neglected block of workshops, are lined with framed posters of his own production. The posters can be regarded as trophies of a kind, like a rock musicianÆs display of gold and platinum albums. They are signs of having exhibited in the right places at the right times. As for the generation of Immendorff (b. 1945), these were places such as Galerie N?chst St. Stephan (Vienna), Kunsthalle Bern, van Abbemuseum (Eindhoven) and Villa Stuck (Munich) which were important stations at the end of the 1970Æs and the beginning of the 1980Æs. Posters are an element of reality, the universe of the streets breaking into the artistÆs studio, and what this artist calls a reminiscence of his political past., English, Year2006, Illust. Aggiungi al carrelloHardback. Condizione: New. It has become a commonplace in Per Kirkeby exhibition catalogues to note that he earned a Master's in geology and participated in five research expeditions to Greenland, and to declare that he therefore paints in layers -- as obviously only a sedimentary geologist can. Not only do curators and critics rarely delve any deeper into the relation between the work of this prolific experimental artist and his background in Arctic Quaternary geology, but they also entirely ignore the many other academic interests that inform his art, both conceptually and visually. Yet Kirkeby himself has proclaimed, "A picture without intellectual superstructure is nothing." In "The Artist as Polyhistor", Lars Morell provides the superstructure missing from other critical accounts by examining intellectual content and allusions in the Kirkeby oeuvre from eleven disciplinary perspectives -- everything from theology to genetics and eros to crystallography. In addition, he has drawn on personal conversations with the artist, whose comments on the manuscript have also been incorporated into the final text. Morell maintains that art that is genuinely about something is necessarily full of conflict and unexpected juxtapositions. As a result, the works he has sought out here are rarely beautiful in formal terms, but instead tend to be dissonant and dynamic, featuring breaks and breaches and irreconcilable elements. With 150 handsome illustrations, chiefly in colour, and a wide-ranging but clearly written text, this volume will appeal equally to the general reader and the specialist in contemporary art.

This is the first monograph on the Stone House, conceptualised by Per Kirkeby and erected in 1996 in Jutland, Denmark; a fascinating brick building of sparse elegance, accommodating the geological collection of the university Skµrum M°lle. Presented is the genesis of the exhibition hall from the first sketches to the erection complemented by the auditorium, the observatory and the study hall. The author gives many references to sacral architecture and modern classics, such as Peter Behrens. Furthermore he reveals KirkebyÆs surprising sources of inspiration: for example the staircase in RembrandtÆs painting The Meditating Philosopher., English, Year2006, Illust. B/W15, Illust. In January 1998, a bronze sculpture was installed by the German painter G?nther F÷rg in front of Boggalleriet in R°nde. It was erected on private initiative, but in the public space, and thus was R°nde one of the few places in Denmark where the cityscape can see a sculpture of a foreign artist. The layout of G?nther F÷rgs stele was the first step in the project Open Water, working with an art and urban project in R°nde center. In the book Lars Morell interprets the stele by putting it in the context of the specific environments in R°nde. Likewise, he compares the sculpture to seven steles at Louisiana set with nature as background. The book ends with a conversation between G?nther F÷rg and Lars Morell. Here G?nther F÷rg tells why he, who is a painter, makes sculptures. The book has a loose dust jacket by G?nther F÷rg printed as an original lithograph by Hostrup-Pedersen & Johansen., German / Danish, Year2001, Illust. B/W3, Illust. Color13, ISBN , Code 6865.
