Trade paperback. Condizione: Very good. First Paperback Printing [Stated]. x, [2], 345, [3] pages. Figure. Table. List of Contributors. Notes. Index. Thazha Varkey Paul (born in 1956) is an Indo-Canadian political scientist. He is a Distinguished James McGill professor of International Relations in the department of Political Science at McGill University. Paul specializes in International Relations, especially international security, regional security and South Asia. He is most notable for his work on asymmetric warfare, soft balancing, and deterrence theory. He has also contributed to the literatures on nuclear non-proliferation, and South Asian security. Patrick M. Morgan was a respected international security scholar who specialized in international conflict, deterrence, regional security, US-European relations, alliances and multilateralism, and East Asian security affairs. James J. Wirtz was chairman and associate professor, Department of National Security Affairs, Naval Postgraduate School, California. As the costs of a preemptive foreign policy in Iraq have become clear, strategies such as containment and deterrence have been gaining currency among policy makers. This comprehensive book offers an agenda for the contemporary practice of deterrenceespecially as it applies to nuclear weaponsin an increasingly heterogeneous global and political setting. Moving beyond the precepts of traditional deterrence theory, this groundbreaking volume offers insights for the use of deterrence in the modern world, where policy makers may encounter irrational actors, failed states, religious zeal, ambiguous power relationships, and other situations where the traditional rules of statecraft do not apply. A distinguished group of contributors here examines issues such as deterrence among the Great Powers; the problems of regional and nonstate actors; and actors armed with chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons. Complex Deterrence will be a valuable resource for anyone facing the considerable challenge of fostering security and peace in the twenty-first century.

Hardback thick octavo, dustjacket, very good condition (in good dustjacket), black & white photos, corners boards lightly bumped, minor edgewear jacket (spine ends & corners little worn, few scratches). Heavy (1.2 Kg), and extra postage may be requested to destinations outside Australia. 575 pp. B. A. Santamaria, Your Most Obedient Servant: Selected Letters 1938 - 1996, edited by Patrick Morgan (2007). This collection of letters spanning 60 years shows facets of Santamaria's personality and activities not previously disclosed. The letters are both personal and professional. He speaks frankly on matters of state, church and family, and he is revealed as a person more subtle in his views than his public persona would suggest. The letters offer a rare glimpse into a mind that was preoccupied for more than six decades with world events and ideological controversies. B. A. Santamaria remained a unique and influential conservative Irish-Catholic force in Australian and Victorian politics for more than 50 years.

Trade paperback. Condizione: Good. x, 406 pages. Figures. Footnotes. Table. References. Index. The cover has minor wear and soiling. The book has many passages marked and/or underlined. This was a project of the University of California Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation. David A. Lake (born 10 August 1956) is an American political scientist. He is the Gerri-Ann and Gary E. Jacobs Professor of Social Sciences and Distinguished Professor of Political Science at the University of California, San Diego. He is known for his contributions to International Relations and International Political Economy. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2006. He has been President of the International Studies Association and the American Political Science Association. He received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1984. Patrick M. Morgan was a widely respected international security scholar who specialized in the study of international conflict, deterrence, regional security, US-European relations, alliances and multilateralism, and East Asian security affairs. Throughout a long career in teaching, research, public lectures, and engagement with public officials, Pat was interested in finding ways to prevent the outbreak of violent conflict. His first job in the profession was in the political science department at Washington State University. He remained there for 24 years. In 1991, he took up the Tierney Chair in Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of California Irvine, where he later co-founded and directed the Global Peace and Conflict Studies program. He retired from UC Irvine in 2014. Conflict among nations for forty-five years after World War II was dominated by the major bipolar struggle between the United States and the Soviet Union. With the end of the Cold War; states in differing legions of the world are taking their affairs more into their own hands and working out new arrangements for security that best suit their needs. This trend toward new "regional orders" is the subject of this book, which seeks both to document the emergence and strengthening of these new regional arrangements and to show how international relations theory needs to be modified to take adequate account of their salience in the world today. Rather than treat international politics as everywhere the same, or each region as unique, this hook adopts a comparative approach. It recognizes that, while regions vary widely in their characteristics, comparative analysis requires a common typology and set of causal variables. It presents theories of regional order that both generalize about regions and predict different patterns of conflict and cooperation from their individual traits. The editors conclude that, in the new world of regional orders, the quest for universal principles of foreign policy by great powers like the United States is chimerical and dangerous. Regional orders differ, and policy artist accommodate these differences if it is to succeed. Contributors are Brian L. Job, Edmund J. Keller, Yuen Foong Khong, David A. Lake, David R. Mares, Patrick M. Morgan. Paul A. Papayoanou, David J. Pervin, Philip G. Roeder, Richard Rosecrance and Peter Schott, Susan L. Shirk, Etel Solingen, Arthur A. Stein.and Steven E. Lobell.
